Committee closing
chancellor search
By Rex Seline
The UNL Chancellor's Search Committee is very close
to completing its task and will be submitting a list of
names to NU President D.B. Vamer "in a few days, maybe
a week," according to committee chairman Richard Gilbert,
professor of chemical engineering.
Gilbert said the committee, originally slated to complete
its work by Dec. 1 , is "essentially telling the president here
are six or seven or eight names of people we consider
qualified to be chancellor."
Varner said Wednesday that he will provide all the
information he is given to each member of the NU Board
of Regents. -
The regents will determine the final selection process.
Varner said he does not know if they will interview all of
the candidates.
Gilbert said his committee will not rank the candidates
when they submit the list to Varner nor have committee
mejnbers talked to any candidate personally.
"All the information we've gotten is from talking to
other people," Gilbert said. "It's possible some candidates
were nominated by someone else and don't even know
they're candidates yet."
Gilbert would not disclose the names of those being
considered and Vamer said he had not been told.
About 170 persons originally applied for the post,
according to Gilbert. He said three criteria were used to
narrow the selections:
Scholarship or academic leadership. "In our opinion,
UNL is the leading scholarly institution in the state. The
chancellor should reflect that," he said.
-A proven administrative record. Gilbert said the
committee "restricted it to line personnel. They had to be
at least a (department) chairman, a dean, vice-chancellor
or even a chancellor someplace else."
-An understanding of the scope of the job. The
chancellor is "not just a leader of the faculty, not just a
father figure to the student body," but must be able to
work with the Legislature and the people of the state,"
Gilbert said.
The final selection will replace acting Chancellor Adam
Breckenridge, who was picked to fill in for former
Chancellor James Zumberge, now president of Southern
Methodist University.
Faculty union vote set
UNL faculty members will decide on collective bargain
ing in a Febr. 16 election. Benjamin Wall, Nebraska State
Court of Industrial Relations judge, met with attorneys for
the faculty and NU administration Wednesday to set the
date and procedures.
The court ordered last week that UNL faculty members
could form a collective bargaining unit. The February
election also will allow faculty members to accept or reject
the Association of University Professors (AAUP) as their
bargaining agent.
Bruce Wright, regents' attorney, will provide a list of
eligible voters to the court. UNL faculty members eligible
to vote include all full-time professors below the rank of
dean and assistant dean as of Jan. 5, 1976.
