lights off drive
sliced fuel costs
Continued from p. 1
Last year's attempt to conserve energy a "lights off
campaign, turning off building airhandlers at the end of
each work day, removing unnecessary lights and setting
thermostats at 67 degrees-resulted in electricity con
sumption cut by 26 per cent, fuel oil by 36 per cent and
natural gas by 25 per cent compared with 1973, Wright
said.
This year thermostats will be set at 65 degrees, he said,
and unnecessary lights in Love Memorial Library North
will be removed.
In most years, UNL fuel oil consumption begins Oct. 15,,
but Wright said because of mild fall weather natural gas has
been available.
UNL uses No. 6 fuel oil, the last grade of fuel oil that
will burn. No. 6 fuel oil is 20 to 25 cents a gallon less
expensive in late summer because residue from road repair,
its source, is plentiful. However, UNL cannot buy it then
because every storage tank is full, Wright said.
If plans for a 800,000 gallon storage tank continue,
Wright said, he could buy No. 6 fuel oil during late summer
when it is less expensive and store about half the total
amount of fuel oil needed each winter.
Wright said the storage tank project is No. 14 on Capital
Construction's priority list and if the project is financed it
will be in operation for the 1976 heating season.
