Quick SUN course approval rejected
By Sandy Mohr
A proposal for approval of seven new State University
of Nebraska (SUN) courses was rejected Tuesday by the
CoJlege of Arts and Sciences Curriculum Committee.
SUN asked the committee for the quick approval so
the courses could be aired next semester, according to Tom
Bestul, chairman of the committee.
SUN educational programs on NETV Channel 12, de
signed primarily for adults, can be taken for college credit.
The committee decided that SUN first must, receive ap
proval from each department involved before the commit
tee can take action. The committee will not meet again
this semester.
The quick approval SUN requested "makes it almost
impossible for serious review," Bestul said.
Previously approved
The only two courses mat previously have been ap
proved for college credit by the College of Arts and
Sciences, psychology and computer science, are being
discontinued from the SUN program next semester.
The computer science course will not be offered again
because not enough students registered this semester to pay
for the course, Doris Gardner, course instructor, told the
committee.
Assistant Psychology Professor Don Bernstein said that
because SUN will not revise the psychology course current
ly aired, his department will delete the courses.
The course was approved last year by Bernstein's depart
ment before it was fully prepared, he said, and after
approval the Psychology Dept. had no further role in
teaching the course.
Because materials for some of the proposed SUN courses
have not been received by the appropriate departments, the
committee recommended that SUN use the regular curric
ulum approach. This approach involves department ap
proval, approval by the college curriculum committee and,
finally, approval by the university curriculum committee.
Proposed courses
The new courses proposed are "Writing for a Reason,"
"Children's Literature," "Political Parties," "Introduction
to Symphonic Music," "Energy for Life," "Character
istics of Learning Disabilities," and "Adam's Chronicles'
(a history course).
Of the six departments involved in these courses, four
reported they have received little or no information on the
course.
The University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) is con
sidering these SUN courses at the same time.
If UNL refuses and UNO oks a SUN course for credit,
Bestul said, a student can take the course through UNO and
transfer the credit to UNL.
The committee decided to ask UNL departments in
volved in the proposed courses to discuss them with
respective UNO departments.
