Although black Americans are embroiled in a controver
sy concerning their participation in the Bicentennial, they
have reasons to celebrate, according to Patrick Wells.
Wells, former chairman of UNL's pharmacology dept.
and current dean of pharmacology at Texas Southern Uni
versity, Wednesday told about 140 persons attending the
Mai one Community Center's 44th annual banquet that
participation in the Bicentennial should be each individual's
decision.
"But, black Americans have reasons to celebrate," he
said. "During this Bicentennial year, black America should

celebrate its present."
Wells, who also is president of the National Pharma
ceutical Association, said blacks can celebrate the levels
of progress reached by their institutions, organizations,
churches, community centers and "our contemporary
dreamers."
"Black Americans must remember to reaffirm each
other," he said. ". . .Too many Americans have not
been given full participation in the freedom experience."
A native of Texas, Wells suggested that black com
munities "rededicate their energies" for the future of
black America by finding solutions to the "age-old
problems" of crime, drug abuse and poverty.
He said it is "heartbreaking" to see these problems when
nothing is being done to solve them: He commended the
Malone Center for its' work on community problems.
