Steward said the College 01 Ar-niiecnire recognizes ine Water resources programs selected Massive political and economic instability in countries with severe food shortages has been cited as why Nebraska water and agricultural resources must be improved. For that reason showh in a self-evaluation report and UNL's past high quality performance, three areas in the Water Resources Management Program were designated 1975 areas of excellence. Only one of these areas, the Agricultural Economics dept., involves students in a classroom situation. Serves the state The Water Resources Research Institute (WRRI) and Conservation and Survey Division directly serve the state, more than the university, according to Karen Stork, ad ministrative assistant at WRRI. The purpose of WRRI is to conduct research and edu cational and training activities which are responsive to Nebraska's water resource needs, according to the report. The institute also attempts to coordinate university water resource efforts. The Conservation and Survey Division investigates and provides information about Nebraska's groundwater. The professional advisory committee is expected to be a permanent body, which will meet two or three times a year. Renovation needed The architecture college is using space in the former law building, so money was needed for equipment and renova tion, Steward said. More than 400 students are taking courses in the College of Architecture this year and may enroll either in a six-year program leading to an architecture degree or a two-year program of community and regional planning. Architecture students may specialize in construction management, business administration, engineering manage ment, interior design or landscaping, Steward said. The college offers two optional one-year exchange pro grams in London or Guadalajara, Mexico for students in their fourth or fifth year of study. Steward said the major goal of the College of Architec ture is to create an open and questioning learning environ ment, which will strengthen the architecture and planning professions in Nebraska. The college has an obligation to provide leadership to the professions while serving community development interests throughout the state, Steward said. nomic analysis to questions regarding production, market- . 1 - ing, policy, community development ana lana ana waier resource economics of agriculture. Teaching, research and cooperative extension education are its divisions of responsibility. The $265,000 appropriation for the areas of excellence in Water Resources Management is earmarked for upgrading efforts in education, data collection and resource manage ment techniques, according to Millard Hall, WRRI director. This first year funding was used primarily for new staff salaries, Stork said. Impetus for the water resources area of excellence came from state, local and federal needs, not student demands, the report on the project stated. Direction differs "Without water we don't have an economy" because agriculture could not exist, Stork said. Consequently, the program's direction differs from others, the report indicated. "We are concerned with two client groups-the on campus regular students and the decision-making public," Stork said. S I ItlEORASKA. CROSS-COUNTRY.
