ride helps specialty tea m success By Jim Hunt Pride seems to be the appropriate word to descirbe the attitude of this year's Husker specialty teams, "There seems to be a lot more pride in being on the special teams this year," said Cletus Fischer, who coaches the kickoff re turn, extra pcing and field goal teams. While Fischer and Warren Powers, who is in charge of the punt return and kickoff coverage units, work especially close with the specialty teams, the entire coaching staff is involved. The coaching staff stresses the kicking game's importance to the players by work ing on it during the middle of practice, Powers said. The players are still fresh then, but toward the end they are tired and looking forward to going home, he added. "The kicking game almost cost us the game at Oklahoma State," Powers said, re ferring to the Cornhuskers' 28-20 victory in Stillwater. "It was the difference be tween us having an easy victory and almost getting beat." Big 8 leader Going into today's game, Nebraska's punter Randy Lessman averages 39.2 yards on 49 punts. Nebraska's opponents have averaged 2.7 return yards per punt, making the Huskers the league leader in that de partment. "Our punting game, except for the Oklahoma State game, has been real good," Fischer added. Powers noted that Nebraska has re ceived fewer penalties for blocking below the waist on punt returns this year than last. "Mike Coyle (Hiisker place kicker) has been kicking very good," Fischer said. "He has been very consistent within his range." The Cornhuskers, who are averaging 7.1 yards on punt re turns, still have to work on setting up a wall, he said. The kicking game has played an import ant part in three Husker victories this year, Powers said. He noted the ability to keep Louisiana State University in poor field position as an important factor in that game. A blocked punt and the Bummerc oski fake punt play helped against Colo rado. "Field position is a very important factor that is not very recognizable to the fan," he said. "If a team starts a drive on their own 20 the chances of scoring are about 20 per cent. However, if a team starts on its own 40, chances of scoring increase' to about 70 per cent." Like any other play The Bummerooski (fake punt) play against Missouri is just like any other play-if the execution is good it willwork, Fischer said. "If the defense is careless you have a chance to pop a big play," he said. The NCAA's restriction on taking only a 48 man traveling squad on road games has hurt the specialty teams, Fischer said, be cause some players that would have been on the teams last year now are left at home.
