Wednesday, October 29, 1975 page 9 daily nebraskan Woman fired from KFMQ Ann Perkinton, KFMQ radio's only fe male disc jockey, was fired Monday morn ing and, she said, it was because she refused to go to work on Women's Strike Day (today). "They (KFMQ) fired me a half hour after my support of the strike,'' Perkinton said. "However, they (KFMQ management) tried to tell me I was fired because I wasn't following the format." Perkinton said she had asked tire KFMQ management if she could play only women's music on her midnight to 6 a.m. shift Oct. 29 in an "aware but at work" ef fort to recognize the strike. She said she was told that was "going against format." "I really wasn't expecting this (refusal) to happen," she said. "I had been trying to take the path of least resistance. "It was a fight to get the job to begin with," Perkinton said. "It's been a constant struggle." "I was hired under false pretenses," she said. "I was told I would eventually be moved to different hours for more money. The raises promised us two weeks ago have been moved to January. "I was paid a straight weekly salary of $115. I haven't asked anyone, but I can safely say I'm the lowest paid disc jockey there, and I've been there the fifth or sixth longest of anyone," said Perkinton. KFMQ has five full-time and four part time announcers. Sunday night, is DJ Jeff Taylor's last at ELD OVER! She said he is quitting because he can't understand the limitations put on employes, and that he supported her in her fight. According to Larry Morphew, firing Perkinton was not a feminist issue. "She distorted it and turned it into one," he said. "I told her three or four hours prior to her dismissal not to announce the women's program she had planned, but she announced it any way."
