Ag board cites removal of intercampus barriers
By Dick Hovorka
The Fees Allocation Board's (FAb) ap
proval last Wednesday of a $1,000 request
by the Ag Advisory Board to construct a
bulletin board on East campus will not
effect most people.
But Larry Rasmussen, president of the
Ag Advisory Board, said the approval
meant more than simply a bulletin board
for East Campus.
"Students (East Campus) have a better
appreciation of what goes on on the down
town campus. I have the utmost respect for
the board," Rasmussen said. "I think we
found out people on the downtown cam
pus are reasonable."
He said East Campus students fell they
were being discriminated against when it
came to fees allocation. The Ag Board felt
only one club which directly affected East
Campus students, the Bar-M dub, was re
ceiving student fees. The club receives
$100.
In the request, the board recognized
that a major portion of student fees went
to support of the University Health Center,
East campus Union, Nebraska Union and
other programs available to all students.
The process of acquiring a bulletin
board for East Campus began in the spring
of 1973, Rasmussen said. Students went
through the Physical Plant and Dean's
office in the College of Agriculture before
applying to the FAB.
"Students are now enthused about get
ting involved in activities. They want to get
involved in downtown Boards and activi
ties," Rasmussen said.
Rasmussen said 52 students showed up
at the FAB meeting in which the vote was
7-2-2 to approve the request.
One of the two dissenting voters, Doug
Smith, said he wanted to wait for construc
tion of the East Campus Union because
there may be "duplication." He said he
thought it was not FAB's place to approve
a bulletin board but the Physical Plant's
responsibility.
Students look for ne w market sites
Three possible new sites for Lincoln's
Farmer's Market were considered in a pro
ject recently concluded by 12 UNL archi
tecture graduate students.
The Farmer's Market has been located
at 12 St. between N and O streets. Because
of limited space and the possibility of con
struction of the Centrum block, between
'11th and O streets, architecture profes
sors Roger Schluntz and James Porter co
ordinated a design project for the students.
Porter said the project was designed to
show other possibilities for locating the
market, although the 12th St. site was
"reasonably successful."
"The students worked in teams and
focused on three locations for the market,"
Porter said. The sites were 11th St. be
tween P and Q streets, 7th St. in front of
the train station, and Haymarket Square,
on 9th St. between N and O streets.
"The students treated the project from
an imaginative and realistic standpoint,"
Porter said. "We were concerned with
colorful, interesting and appropriate de
signs for a permanent site."
He said the idea was formulated in
conjunction with Larry Jorgenson, Lincoln
Center Development director. Jorgenson
said he studied the Farmer's Market and
discussed with Porter and Schluntz possi
bilities of different locations.
"Whether there will be a new market
location is still debatable," Porter said.
Lincoln "is definitely going to have a
Farmer's Market, but the present location
may not be available," Jorgenson said.
He said he suggested Porter and
Schluntz do a project in case the market
has to be moved.
The students design projects, "were
very well done," he said. Students pre
sented their designs before a downtown
advisory committee Oct. 18. The commit
tee was pleased with them, Jorgenson said.
