Now ASUN may terminate its membership in the NSA because of a $250 increase in annual dues. There are other reasons why NSA should not receive, a dime of the student's money. - From its inception, NSA has purported to be only a student service organization, divorced from politics. This claim has been maintained partly for tax exemption purposes and partly because it is hard to justify the payment of student fees to political organizations. A look at the NSA's record will reveaMhat it is about as apolitical as Hubert Humphrey. 1. At the 1969 NSA convention, the vice president of NSA urged the delegates to "consider disruption seriously. The SKS chapter deserves our admiration and support." 2. NSA urged student governments to boycott Coors Beer. ' " . 3. NSA advocated the admission of Red China to the United Nations. mm I HATE THIS BOOH 50 MUCH I COUL0...1 COULD.., Dear editor, Today is the thirtieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if there had been no U.N. formed in 1945? You might answer there would have been wars, starva tion, and no cooperation among nations. Well, to bring you back to reality there have been a number of wars, starvation on a large scale in many parts of the world and very little cooperation among nations. You might say this is only because not enough nations have given the UN enough support. Well, have you ever wondered what would happen if the U.N. became a power ful supergovernrnent, as many of its founders intended? With even more power than the United States it could force nations to stop all wars and share all food. If you think that is a good idea, here are a few examples of how the UN has used and plans to use its power. (1) It has expelled an original member, the Republic of China, for the communist butchers of Red China. N(2) A UN "peace force" helped crush Christian, anti Communist leader Moise T&hombe in Central Africa for the Communist cutthroats that now rule the region. (3) It brought on the Vietnam War by putting controls on the United States for an honorable victory in Korea. October 24 in reality is a day of shame and I believe it is time to get the UN out of the United States and the United States out of the UN. Americans then could be a light in a world of darkness. . JimSchroeder Rationale questioned Dear editor, United Nations Day was set aside to celebrate the found ins of an international forum of discussions about multi lateral and bilateral problems. Despite the UN's fluctuating credibility gap, many scholars and leaders still view it as a viable unit, or at least as the only international clubhouse for diplomatic pallia tives and high rhetoric. The UN "can bring to bear the weight of world opinion," some leaders contend. - In a radio comment, one of the top officials of the John Birch Society suggested United Nations Day should be called "A Day of Shame." He further suggested the United States should withdraw from the body. These are his reasons: (I) The United Nations is made up of too many Social ists and Communists (as if the UN . was fanned for only ' capitalists and puppets). ' . ' ' " - (2) The admission of Mao's China (which includes about a fourth of humanity) and the expulsion of Taiwan.- (3) The condemnation of South Africa and Rhodesia. . If these reasons csjj be . s'jhfcd as justifications for 4. NSA recommended that policemen be barred from college enrollment. 5. NSA supported the Ceasar Chavez grape boycott. 6. NSA attacked the fraternity system as racist. 7. NSA attacked the Greek military dictatorship and supported the dictatorship in North Vietnam, 8. NSA urged the boycott of Coca-Cola. (NSA thought that Coca-Cola was a tool of American imperialism. They must have discovered that the American military effort in Vietnam wa3 financed by the return of empty Coke bottles.) Even the student who, like NSA, drools at the mere mention of Mao Tse-Tung or Huey Newton must agree that the support of an organization as politically involved as NSA should be a matter of individual discretion. Therefore, I propose that instead of writing a mild letter to NSA expressing reluctance to pay the $250 due increase, ASUN should declare its intention never to pay another cent to NSA. Then, they should order past ASUN presidents who have allocated fees to NSA to repay these dues to UNL students or be drowned in Broyhill Memorial Fountain. - 1 "VJm? rp? V did j just see you KICK THAT BOOH 70 wd$, somt 4 p- WPlPN'TUUm COACH ISfflW 1 I . r (WHAT DOES OVtCH tagging United Nations Day "A Day of Shame" and a call for the United States to withdraw from the UN, then the myopic dimensions of the rationals of, some of our "men at the top" are apparent. Phases like trie "tyranny of the majority" have surfaced in the UN as a lashout for member states that vote against U.S. and Western interests. But we must note that when voting is in favor of U.S. and Western interests the phrase is "the dignity of democracy." Yessir, the world is built on a solid rock of dual standards. BunKalil High echelon racism Dear editor, I am responding to a statement made by the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. His Excellency Daniel Patrick Moynihan said Ugandan President Ida Amin is a "racist murderer." He could not have made a better statement. With such denouncing and picking at racists and murderers we can be optimistic that the fight against racism has reached the higher echleons of the diplomatic circles. But before our optimism goes to our heads, let's look at the circumstances that led to the tonguelashing that has been making headlines all over the world. President Amin was called a "racist murderer" because he threatened to kill a British lecturer who called him a "village tyrant." Where was Moynihan when some intelligence agency employed this "racist murderer" (then a soldier)) to over throw the regime of Milton Obote in a coun that fift many innocent people dead? ' Where was Moynihan during the Attica Massacre or during the recently revealed use of blacks and Jews as guinea pigs to test drugs for the military or when Alabama Gov. George Wallace prevented black students from enter ing a university. Maybe his excellency says let's forget the past and look forward to the future. Fine, if that's the case. But why doesn't he make a statement now denouncing continued VS. arms and moral support for the racist rca'mes of Rhodesia and South Africa, where a few thousand whites still dictate to 27 or more million black Africans? Moynihan is from the world's greatest democracy and is that nation's ambassador to the world body. He can say something. Or does it not really matter to him as long as iVt Jews or blacks or Chicanos that get killed? Peter Kenyatta Interpretation varies Dear editor, Amin's statement in the United Nations may be subject ed to a dual interpretation. It all depends on which side of the fence you are. . For Israel and its supporters, Amin's statement may be a vindication of defpseated hatred for the Jews. Every ethnic group is reasonably justified to castigate a person or any group that wish them harm, rightly or wrongjy. On th oilier side of the coin, Amin may epitomize the ingredients of hero for the Arabs or, more so. for the Palestinians. - To Ui the consistency of moral decency of Daniel Editor's note: This message from John Welch of the ASUN Government Liaison Committee, brought to the Daily Nebraska near press time, so exactly expresses our views that we have scut tled our editorial for it. We implore not only students, but also faculty members, admin istrators and staff, to act on Welch's advice. What comes out of the Legislature's current special session could drastically affect the lives of all UNL students. Thus it is imperative that students discard what ever apathy they may have, and use the tools available to them to persuade state senators that this university cannot afford a four and one-half per cent budget cut. The ASUN Goverment Liaison Committee was told Tuesday by UNL officials that potential consequences of such a budget cut include: can cellation of summer school classes, freezing of faculty positions (not hiring to fill vacancies), ending second semestef early because of lack of money to heat buildings, and forcing students to provide materials for examinations. I urge all students to write their state senators; their names and addresses are at the ASUN office or the Clerk of the Legislature. If possible, students should see their senators in person, and ask parents or nonstudent friends to contact their senators also. I urge students to act now, or they will regret it! Moynihan and the White House I would like to hear their statements about the "Invisible Hand" that directed these events: (1) The en masse liquidation of Indians by so-called Christian colonizers. (2) The showers of blessings heaped on slave trade by so called Christians. (3) The lynching of blacks by the Ku Klux Klan, who utilized the flaming cross of Jesus Christ as their symbol. (4) The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (5) The destabilization of foreign governments and the liquidation of foreign leaders (Salvador Ailende, Patrice Lumumba, etc. (6) The plowing (by bombs) of Vietnam and Cambodia, (7) The My Lai Massacre. (8) The stockpiling of the world's greatest war arsenal. Can we tag these "Invisible Hands "racist murderers" or "christian crusaders?" Again, it depends on which side of the fence you are. Damani Okang Snow job Dear editor, s I am concerned about civil rights and tired of being just another apathetic citizen. It is a sad day when anyone has to die because of some one's bias or prejudice, but worse yet is when a person proved (by a polygraph) to be free of malice is prosecuted for protecting his own life, 1 am referring to the Sept. 24 sheriff. I, too, cry for the true facts of the shooting to be re leased. It is quite clear that the facts about the incident, as well as facts about Sherdell Lewis, have not been disclosed. An important question here is, what criteria arc necessary to create a martyr? Second, is it right for one of Omaha's biggest racists to establish this martydrom'. These questions are for the people to decide, but I am fearful that what is occurring now will turn out to be one of the most successful "snow jobs" ever performed on an entire city (via a racist from Omaha)! T.G. Children's battlo , Dear editor, I have had it. Why can we not stv filling the editorial page with the Greek vs. dorm issue? You are either a Creek or an independent, that is your choice. Why should the general public of this campus be subjected to this battle? Let the Greeks live their lives and let the independents live theirs. My fraternity does not look down on independents and we are tired of hearing children battle the issue out. Remember, different strokes for different folks. There are more important issues than whether Greeks throw more water balloons and cuss more than indepcn dents. If you're really offended by this sort of tiling, p cotton in your ears and wear a rain coat!. Mark Kwzie Delta Sigma Pi
