"In the interview' she said, "we try to look for their motives and why they want to'do volunteer work." Most are underclassmen "We discourage students from going into volunteer work, if what they tell us shows they don't have the desire to do the service work," Costigan added. She said most of the students going through the Community Involvement Service are freshmen or sophomores. "Upperclassmen usually are pursuing work in their own fields," Costigan said. She said many students may be interested in the field of drug counseling. The Open Door Health Center is starting a 24-hour drug crisis line and walk-in drug counseling service, she said. "This job is for someone who can talk to a person when he is having trouble with drugs," Costigan said. Therapist needed It is a new volunteer service, so there are quite a few openings, she added. She also needs an assistant educational therapist to help with emotionally and mentally disturbed pre-high school level students, Costigan said. The service is looking for students studying in related areas, she said. It is an excellent opportunity to get basic experience with this type of child. A child care program being set up at a local church could use some students to do volunteer work, she said. "A student in human development or education would fill this position well," Costigan said. Labor Co-op They also need people to help low-income, physically handicapped or older people repair their property thfough the Labor Co-op, she said. This involves Friday night and Saturday volunteer work, Costigan said. She said there are many other areas where student volunteers are needed and these are posted in the Union Main lounge bulletin board. "These jobs are all great for the person who wants to get out into the community," Costigan said. THE fiilelritt!
