thursday, October 16, 1975 daily nebraskan page 5 Student learns to 'cheat' Mike Zangari earned three collese cred its last semester by learning how to cheat at card games. Zangari, a student in UNL's Centennial College, did a videotaped documentary on how to win poker games by card sharking. He worked with two Centennial residents and Centennial fellow Ric Marsh on the project. "The student designs his own courses, as long as he can justify what he's doing," Zangari said. About 150 students are earning college credit this semester through the Centennial program. According to Nelson T. Potter, senior fellow and associate professor of philoso phy, the program is designed to let stu dents "direct their own education and pursue their own interests." Pass-fail encouraged "We encourage pass-fail so that students will stop thinking about grades," Potter said. "The emphasis is on being more crea tive, autonomous and self-directed." Centennial students are required to take six hours of Centennial credit, and can take as many regular UNL courses as they want. According to Zangari, most students take six to eight hours outside of Centennial. Centennial credit can be earned in a variety of ways, Zangari said. Students can take conventional college courses, such as English and history, or they can design their own courses. Several have earned credit in wine tasting, opera and mime, he said. Two projects Centennial students are working on this semester are a law project ana a special student project, Potter said. The law project consists of two senior law students working with Centennial students on criminal law principles. The project, which is several years old, helps undergraduates learn about the law, and is especially good for pre-law students, Potter said. Centennial students are "breaking bar riers" in the special student project, he said. One of their interests is to develop barrier-free buildings at UNL for the blind and wheel chair victims, he said. This includes the installment of ramps instead of steps outside buildings and elevators inside buildings, he said. -Blind program Several Centennial s'udents have been reading course assignments onto tapes for blind students, Potter said. Currently 10 Centennial students are in the program. Twelve students are working with Gene Harding, director of the Teaching' and Learning Center, on a "personal semester" project, designed for students who are unsure of what they want to do in school. . This program gives them opportunity to explore possibilities. The Centennial program employs 1 1 fel lows, or instructors, who help students direct their studies and approve their projects. Eighty of the 150 Centennial stu dents live in Neihardt Residence Center, and most of the rest live off campus. The residence program is run by the housing office, but the Centennial aca demic program is part of the instructional budget, said Potter.
