thursday, October 16, 1975 Ci3iSy ncurssksn Computer to centralize needs of deaf . . ByDebAlward " Next fall, all United States teachers will be able to ask a central computer where to find suitable materials for their deaf and hard of hearing students. According to Dr. Robert Stepp, pro gram director of UNL's Specialized Office for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, his office tries to locate materials the deaf can use, modify them as needed and produce new materials. The specialized office works under the National Center on Educational Media and Materials for the Handicapped at Ohio State University. The three other national specialized of fices, including those for the blind, are lo cated in Louisville, Ky., for the handi capped, the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Indiana University at Bloom ington distribution centers. All offices are in the second year of a three-year contract from the Bureau of Education for the Handicapped, Stepp said. The 1975-76 contract is for $550,000. UNL contract This is the twelfth year that the Bureau of Education has contracted with UNL to provide special services for deaf students, he said. The first university contract was in 1964 and Lincoln became a regional center in 1966, he said. Dr. George Propp. head of the search and retrieval part of the program, said he wants teachers of the deaf to be able to teach prescriptively. "I want teachers to give us a specific request so we can give them a specific response," he said. Inventory Propp, himself deaf, is doing an inven tory of all items to be recorded in the com puter. He said the office has compiled 5,000 items in the last year and hopes to have 5,000 more by next year. "I'm learning how to talk to a compu ter," he said. "We have a subject density that only a computer can handle." According to Propp, education follows fads and trends. He said everyone now is interested in career-related materials. One of the specialized office's subcontracts involves developing Exploration Kits in Career Education. These vocational kits can provide students with job-related ex periences in a particular field, he said. - , . . 'i ... . . ....... ! - S J ' i k i , f k .- - 1 i X - I ' i '4 ?
