Law College dean retires
to return to teaching post
College of Law Dean Henry Crether
announced Monday at a law faculty meet
ing his plans to step down as dean and
return to teaching.
"Ten years in the administrative
position is enough," Grether said .
Saying he enjoys teaching, Grether said
he will continue to teach a class in Wills,
Trusts and Future Interests,
"A lot of the courses I taught ten years
ago have become obsolete," Grether said,
adding that he will look for more courses
to teach depending on the areas of law
study in which teachers are needed.
"I wouldn't trade UNL College of
Law faculty for any in the country" he
said.
The East Campus College of Law
bldg. was a major accomplishment for
himself and his faculty, Grether said.
Other changes brought about since
Grether became dean in 1966 include:
-financing of S50J0OO from the Joyce
Foundation in Chicago last week enabling
the law school to buy closed circuit tele
vision equipment.
-curriculum changes, including the
incorporation of summer sessions which
enable a student to graduate in two and
one half years instead of three years.
-incorporation of joint degree system.
-initiation of a program in which law
school courses are taught to local high
school students.
-formation of the clinical practice
program which enables senior law students
to appear in court and actually practice
law under the supervision of a lawyer.
Grether, 55, joined the NU faculty as
a part-time law instructor in 1948, and
became a full professor in 1957.
Grether, who will step down from his
position as dean,. at the end of this
academic year, holds bachelor of arts and
juris doctorate degrees from the University
of Utah and a masters degree in law from
the Universtiy of Minnesota.
Interim UNL Chancellor Adam
Breckenridge urged law faculty members
at Monday's meeting to choose a small
search committee no later than Nov. 1 to
select a new dean for the College of Law.
