'Showboat' grand scale production
Everything about UNL's production of
Showboat has beendone on a grand scale.
The spectacle is dominated by the
Cotton Blossom, a 42-foot riverboat.
The action in the musical covers the
time from about 1880 to 1920, resulting in
many costume changes by the 65-member
cast.
When Showboat opened on Broadway
in 1927, it was considered conservative be
cause it did not go to the excesses of other
popular musicals of the day. It is now
heralded as the first example of American
musical theater.
Although Showboat contains music,
dance scenes and traditional characters, the
serious dramatic plot distinguishes it from
earlier musicals.
The plot, based on a novel by Edna
Ferber, concerns people living and working
on the Cotton Blossom, Captain Andy's
showboat, which travels on the Mississippi
and gives plays at small towns along the
river.
An unhappy marriage between two
characters, Julie and Steve, may be
history's first stage reference to an inter
racial marriage.
Leading roles are played by Richard
Drews as gambler Gaylord Ra venal, Gary
Lamb as Captain Andy, Patti Harney as his
daughter Magnolia, Melissa Baer as his wife
Parthy Ann, Carol Penterman as Julie, Jim
Sudik as Frank and Kathy Morrow as Ellie.
Professionals Carol Rogers and Lyn
wood Jones will play the parts of Queenie
and Joe, respecitvely.
Showboat, lyrics by Oscar Hammer
stein and music by Jerome Kern, opens
Thursday and runs through Saturday at
Kimball Recital Hall, 11th and R streets,
at 8 pjn., with a Sunday performance at
3 pjn.

Jazz artist visits
Harvi Griffin, the only black jazz harpist in the country,
will perform Thursday evening at 7:30 in the Nebraska
Union South Crib.
Griffin, a Detroit native, has had extensive music train
ing, including three years with the United States Army
Band, a masters degree in music from Michigan State Uni
versity and private study at the Lucille Lawrence M&nnes
School of Music in New York City.
He has performed more than 400 concerts around the
country In night clubs, concert halls, and on college
campuses, as well as guest spots on television talk and
variety shows.
Griffin has performed his unusual style of music at the
White House more than 25 times including a premier
Jerformance for Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and
ohnson. His performance on the UNL campus is
sponsored by the Union Program Council.
