To reduce the number of books "lost"
from Love Memorial Library each year, an
exit-point checkout system is being
planned, according to Gerald Rudolph,
dean of UNL libraries.
But because of a lack of funds, the new
system will not be inaugurated until 1978,
he said.
Under the current security system,
which uses checkers at exits, Rudolph esti
mated that the library loses about 500
volumes yearly.
He attributed much of the loss to what
he said was a reluctance of student
checkers to thoroughly examine all books
and parcels carried out. " -v
All checked
Under the planned exit-point checkout
system, all students' books will be looked
at before they leave the library, Rudolph
said.
He set current security costs at about
$20,000 annually. ,
Rudolph said it would be impractical
for UNL to install an electronic security
system like the one purchased this summer
by the University of Nebraska Medical
Center's (UNMC) Library of Medicine.
Sheila Larsen, public services librarian
at the medical library, said the system
consists of two vertical glass plates
equipped with sensors which generate an
electronic field between them. Devices
have been placed in each of the Library of
Medicine's books, which make them sensi
tive to the electronic field, she said.
If an unchecked book passes through
the field at the exits, an alarm sounds and
the turnstiles are automatically locked,
Larsen said.

Sex, gender
said confused
"A girl is a state of being and a boy is
a . state of becoming," Daniel Weinberg,
a UNL . cultural anthropology " professor
said Tuesday. "
Speaking on "Sex, Gender and Culture"
for WomenSpeak '75, Weinberg said that
is one of the generalizations that arises
when people confuse sex and gender,
which are different.
"Sex is the biological characteristics of
human beings that are inborn. The tw6
sexes we recognize are male and female,"
she said. - .

Record breaking year
Ag enrollment increased
Enrollment in the College of Agriculture
broke records this year. .
Ted Hartung, dean of the agriculture
college,' said enrollment increased from
1 ,422 last year to 1 ,5 17 this year, a 6.3 per
cent increase. Total UNL enrollment
"increased 6.6 per cent.
, The freshman class made record growth,
he said. Last year there were 424 freshmen.
There are 460 this year, a 7.8 per cent in
crease. Overall freshman enrollment went
up 7.2 per cent.
Hartung said there are more women in
agriculture (176) this year than last year
(144).
Many women express interest in horti
culture, food science, agronomy and ag
economics, he said. -
College-wide increases are greatest in
animal science, agronomy and ag
economics, he said.
Hartung said increased enrollment is a
result of "a greater awareness of agricul
ture," which has attracted students that
were not previously concerned.
The favorable agriculture job market
heips draw students, he said. .

feminine, is cultural differences learned
from socialization. Socialization involves .
different treatment for boys and girls and
is learned early "at school, church or in
peer groups," she said. ;
Weinberg cited -tribes in New Guinea
from Margaret Mead's book Male and

necessarily masculine nor female feminine.
"What constitutes masculine and
feminine depends on the culture," she-said,
and noted that the labels are "value judge

the system," she said. Total cost of the elec
tronic security was about $12,000, Larsen
said.
The system would cost much more at
UNL because there are more books and
checkout points, Rudolph said.
The replacement cost for most of the
volumes in the Library of Medicine is four
times the $15 average replacement cost at
UNL, he said.
The $ 1 2 ,000 spread out over the Library
of Medicine's 150,000 volumes makes the
cost about 1 2.5 cents per book.
At that rate, "sensitizing" Love Library's
1 2 million volumes would cost $ 1 50,000.
500Iost
Rudolph estimated the cost of replacing
500 books annually at UNL at $7,500, "so
it would be 20 years before this system
would start saving us money. By that time,
electronic security may be obsolete."
Rudolph said he doesn't know the cost
of implementing the proposed exit-point
checkout system. ' ' : -. .
It would be impossible to prevent all
book losses, he said, since it is impossible
to detect books hidden in purses and under
clothing.
