Fall meets give golfers n
ahead start for spring -. BfiiteWag
Fall competition is important for UNL's
golf team, according to head coach Larry
Romjue.
The Huskers compete in two fall golf
meets each year, Romjue said. Last week
the Huskers played in Oklahoma and Wed
nesday the team travels to St. Louis for a
tournament.
Romjue said fall golf is probably more
important to UNL than to other teams be
cause "without it, we'd be playing tourna
ments in the spring without being outdoors
at all.
"It (fall golf) also help me decide who
to take on those early spring trips."
Placed 17th
The Huskers played in the All-College
Invitational Sept. 27 in Oklahoma City,
Okla., where they placed 17th of 19 teams.
Nebraska is led by returning starters
Doug Smith, a sophomore and junior Craig
Moyer. Both are "pretty well assured" of
starting positions, Romjue said.
Steve Statten, a Lincoln freshman, was
the Huskers' low golfer at the Texas
tournament.
Romjue said junior Todd Thorson, who
played in the Big 8 tournament last spring,
and freshmen Tony Pesavento, Dave
Donachie and $teve Sloan all have a chance
to be one of Nebraska's top six golfers in
spring competition.
The Huskers will participate in a tourna
ment, sponsored by Cornpetevents, Inc.,
Thursday and Friday at the Boogey Hills
course in St. Charles, Mo.
The tournament's field will include.
Southern Illinois, Austin Peay (ClarksviDe,
Tenn.), Kansas, Bradley (Peoria, 111.),
St. Louis University, the University of
Missouri at St. Louis, Arkansas, and
Nebraska.
"Obviously the field there is not as
strong as it was at Oklahoma City," he said.
"I hope we can play better than we did at
Oklahoma City. It's good to play in a
tournament where you have a resaonable
chance of success."
May be cut ..'
Romjue said provisions to cut fall golf
from athletic programs have come up at
NCAA meetings, but haven't been voted
on.
"Unfortunately, it may get to the point
where well have to cut back on fall meets
because of expenses," he said.
Romjue said lack of experience on his
team and Nebraska's late spring weather
makes fall golf important for the Huskers.
"It's hard for the young kids to get their
feet on the ground competitively," he said.
"Also, the weather makes us a have-not, as
far as collegiate golf goes. Spring weather
here is a problem and always will be."
