Bernstein Down East. About a month ago, your host borrowed an Idea from William and Mary Morris's Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins when speculating that Down East might have originated in the fact that people traveling from an important place Boston, for example-to a less important one-some place in Maine, for example would say they were going Down East. That guess, has been challenged by two readers. R.C. Tibbetts of Media, Pa.,and Byard P. Bridge of Philadelphia say the term is traceable to the prevailing winds along the New England coast, which, they assert, are southwesterly so seafarers sailing to Maine went downwind and spoke of going Down East or Down Maine. Bill Morris, a native of New England,, took account of that theory in his diction ary, but added that "a mariner friend assures me that there are no 'prevailing' winds on the coast." Word oddities. Leatrice W. Abraham of Ardmore, Pa., asks about the literal and figurative meanings of watershed. Literally, the word denotes a ridge or piece of high land that divides two areas that are drained by different river systems. Figuratively, it means a critical dividing point or turning point between two courses of action or two phases of a situation.
