It's hard to believe anybody wanted more . scoring
after the third quarter of UNL's 56-14 football win over
Texas Christian University (TCU) Saturday.
Yet, one particular fan was not satisfied.
Riding the Memorial Stadium press box elevator down
with seven minutes remaining in the game and Nebraska
leading 49-14, one woman passenger commented, "I hope
this keeps up."
"Yea, and I bet you like bullfights too," said another
rider.
The tfuskers added another touchdown in the fourth
quarter for the woman's satisfaction, but the score
probably left an adequate impression on TCU coach Jim
Shofner long before.
1 Quick touchdowns
Any question concerning the outcome was squelched in
the second quarter by two quick Husker touchdowns after
the defense produced TCU errors twice inside the 10-yard
line.
Leading by only a 14-7 margin in the second quarter, the
Huskers were forced to punt to the Texans' 12-yard line.
TCU funbled on the next play and Nebraska's junior de
fensive tackle Mike Fultz came up with the ball.
Two plays latere senior tight end Brad Jenkins made a
leaping catch in the end zone between two defenders of a
Terry Luck pass. Mike Coyle added the extra point and the
Huskers held a comfortable 21-7 lead with 9:24 left iathe
half.
"I knew when we lined up that the pass was coming to
me and that I'd be open," Jenkins said. "I prayed the
Lord would take control of my hands. I knew there was a
man on my back, I prayed that Terry would throw it high
because I knew I could out jump them."
Pass intercepted
With Jenkin's prayers answered, the Huskers got the ball
back on the next TCU play when defensive end Ray Phillips
hit Frog quarterback Jimmy Dan Elzner as he threw. Line
backer Cletus Pillen intercepted the lame duck pass and
returned it to the TCU six-yard line.
Sophomore wingback Curtis Craig scored on the next
play, running an inside reverse to give the Huskers a 28-7
margin with 9:03 left. . '
This was Nebraska's second touchdown within 30
seconds.
From then on, all the Husker fans worried about was
how high the score would be, how soon the game would
end and if the referees .would continue calling penalties.
The Huskers were penalized eight times for 99 yards,
while TCU was flagged five times for 73 years.
"The referees made some unusual calls today," said
Husker head coach Tom Osbome. "But it went both ways.
I thought that pass interception call in the third quarter
(which gave Nebraska the ball on the TCU nine-yard line)
would be against Bobby Thomas."
Osbome pleased
Overall, Osbome said he was pleased with the consistent
play of the offensive line, Husker kick-off coverage, the
way the offense scored the first two times it had the ball
and the blackshirt's goal line stand in the third quarter.
"That was a real challenge on our defense," said de
fensive coordinator Monte Kiffin. "That's the first time
we've been able to use it all year, even though it's the first
thing we work on in the fall."
Kiffin also-was pleased with the performance of the pass
defense. Three TCU passes were intercepted and the Frogs
completed only 12 of 26 passes for 153 yards.
"Our pass rush was pretty good, but it can always gt
a lot better," Kiffin said. "Anytime you can hold a team
that throws as much f TCU does to under 50 per cent
completions, you're doing pretty good."
Offensively, Osborne praised the play of quarterbacks
Luck and Vince Ferragamo. "Terry and Vince both had a
good day except they each threw one bad pass," he said.
Wingbacks also had success running and receiving
Saturday. One of the reasons, according to Osborne, was
the linebackers keying on the fullbacks after the Huskers
ran a number of quick traps in the first quarter.
Both Curtis and senior Tom Hciser scored from the
wingback position on inside reverses.
Heiser's 33-yard run in the third quarter was the
Huskers' longest touchdown run of the season, and the first
touchdown the Columbus native has scored since his
freshman year In 1972.
TCU delays interviews

Half an hour after .Texas Christian
University (TCU) lost to Nebraska 56-14
Saturday, TCU head coach Jim Shofner
refused to allow sportswriters into the
TCU locker room.
. It was only after the TCU players had
showered, dressed and began loading their
buses that Shofner opened the locker room
to the press.
Such actions might be expected from
the coach of a team that has lost 13 con
secutive games. TCU's Horned Frogs last
won when they defeated Texas-Arlington
in last season's opener.
"I can't really say much," Shofner said,
breaking the few moments of silence after
writers entered the locker room.
Manhandled
us," he said. "Their strength is in their
size and physical strength. They just
manhandled us."
"Maybe HI have one of those teams
someday," he said, "and I'll know what
it's like io be on the other side of the
field."
The current 0-3 TCU record and last
year's 1-10 mark must be especially
frustrating for Shofner, who had a success
ful collegiate football career as a TCU
halfback from 1955-57.
The Horned Frogs, from the Southwest
Conference, may not see the end of their
losing streak too soon, however. Their
remaining schedule includes Arkansas,
Baylor and Associated Press Top 20
teams Alabama, Texas and Texas A&M.
"This is the league .we're In," he said,
"and it's the one we want to be in."
"This team needs four or five more
games without coming unglued. In the
second ha'f of the season, we're going to be
a good football team," he said.
TCU's starting quarterback Lee Cook,
who also handled the punting chores for
ths Horned Frogs, said the Huskers' rush
bothered him.
J hey had an impressive line; they just
controlled our blockers," Cook said.
: "They've got a great rush. That's what
makes a good pass defense," he said.
"When they're pouring in like that, it's
hard to see where to throw."
Cook said he thinks TCU is improving
every week, despite its 0-3 mark.
Tough schedule
"We probably have one of the toughest
schedules in the nation," he said. ,
"We start conference play next week,
and that's what counts. We've got a better
team than people think."
Split end Mike Renfro, who scored one
of TCU's two touchdowns on a 21-yard
pass reception, agreed with Cook.
"We've got a tough schedule," he said.
"We thought we were getting better every
week, at least until today.
"They've definitely got a good'defense,
and a good team," Renfro said. "That big
really a good one."
Renfro's touchdown reception was
disputed by Nebraska players who argued
that Renfro was out of bounds.
"I definitely think I was in," Renfro
said, "but it was closer than I thought."
