Being a normal human being (a point"
which is debated), I have this desire to
avoid pain and discomfort.
For this reason, I avoid doctors, dentists,
angry women, playing football and errorv
eous writing that could rile the anger of
those who play football.
The other night, for example, I was
having a friendly conversation with Husker
offensive tackle Bob Lingenfelter, and
I happened to notice the size of his hand.
Now, anything attached to the arm of
someone 6 ft. 7 in., 282 lbs., reminds me
of my mortality. Although the conversa
tion was good-natured, when Lingenfelter
talked, I listened.
Zero punt returns
A note appeared on my desk Wednesday
explaining that the Husker defensive unit
was upset I had reported the Indiana re
ceiver beat Dave Butterfield by five steps
on the game's initial play.
"Doesn't that guy know how far five
steps is?" tackle Dean Gissler was reported
as saying. "That's fifteen yards!"
Keep door locked
The note advised me to avoid the locker
room and keep my door locked.
Considering my math background, the
mistake was an honest one. Butterfield was
only five yards behind the man, less than
two steps by Gissler's measurement.
I arrived at the five steps estimation by
taking that many steps behind my desk and
finding the distance covered was five yards.

The new UNL women's golf team will
tee off in their first tournament today.
The team, in its first year, will compete
in two tournaments this fall. The opener
is the Iowa State Invitational in Ames,
Iowa, today and Saturday.
Team members include senior Deb

of Omaha and freshmen Jane Deeter of
Lincoln, Laurel Smedberg of Green Valley,
Calif., and Sharon Stettery of Omaha.
The team tied with Creighton University

The Creighton match gave the team
needed exposure to medal play rather than
match play, Romjue said.
In medal play, golfers are ranked
according to their total scores. Team scores
then are determined from this ranking. In
match play, each golfer from one team is
matched against a golfer from the other
team. The winning team is the one which
wins the most of these Individual match
ups. The team's other fall tournament will ,
be in Columbia, Mo., at the Stephens ' '
College Invitational, Oct. 17 and 18.
