daily nebraskan page j Wednesday, September 24, 1975 Reformatory aid planned A "People in Prisons" program, sponsored by the Student Y, will begin Saturday at the Nebraska Center for Women in York. It will continue through Nov. 22. Kathy Smith, Student Y director, said the program will provide Saturday after noon activities for the residents. The Student Y wanted to do a project with people in prisons and the idea was develop ed at the suggestion of a social woiker at the center, she said. Smith said the residents at the center do not have organized social activities so the goal of their program is to help the center's residents develop social skills and structure their leisure time so they can adjust socially when they leave. The program is not designed to teach only crafts, Smith said, but to provide the residents with social experiences and show them the outside world cares. She said the program also will give student volunteers experiences with people that may be applicable to careers and personal growth. Interests categorized The residents filled out questionnaires, and their interests were categorized music, dance, arts and crafts, creative writing, drama and recreation. Volunteers who have the skills and ability to teach these activities were selected to go to the center on Saturday afternoons.- Smith said 20 students have been chosen and more are needed. Three groups of volunteers will go to the center, each for three consecutive weeks, she said. Staff members in York will provide orien tation. 30 will participate Smith said about 30 of the center's 50 residents will participate in the pro gram. The rest are in maximum security or have chosen not to participate, Smith said. Candy Marshall, a criminal justice major, will organize the volunteers and describe their jobs. - A social worker at the center has encouraged men to participate Smith said, because the interaction will benefit the residents.
