Alice Betts There is a definite distinction between the artistic absurd and the ridiculous. The Night Porter is not only ridiculous, but equally ludicrous, pathetic and tacky. A Joseph Levine production, The Night Porter deals with a former Nazi officer (Dirk Bogarde) who is guilty of war crimes against his prisoners. He encounters the sole survivor (Charlotte Rampling) of his cruel perpetrationsa woman forced to perform sexual acts upon him. The film, intermingled with prison, reminiscences, follows their escapist relationship. I extend my sincerest sympathies to Bogarde and Rampling, although they did seem to be enjoying themselves and each other. Their characters had potential, yet they were sadly underdeveloped. The script offered nothing to develop. Unfortunately, (or fortunately) they had little but their bodies to work with. Much was filmed in BogardeV apart ment as the couple secluded themselves from dogged and. mysterious pursuers. The duo's avid determination to remain es tranged, despite near starvation, is never fully explained. Any psychological "motivation was vague. Consequently, , the extreme sexual attraction between the reunion was un founded. Serious intentions or messages were laughed away in tlisgust. Billed as a pornographic film, The Night Porter is correctly promoted. It is a series of lustful sexual oddities and perversions. Although subjective, even Masters and Johnson may find the' movie a curious approach to sex. Cheap thrills. On Campus Cinema Sheldon Film Theater-12th & R-American Art in the Sixties-Tuesday, 3 pjn.
