Women's careers
discussion topic
Satisfaction of women in traditional and nontraditional
careers was the topic of discussion at Tuesday's Women
Speak program. ,
Guest speaker at the program, which is sponsored by the
Student Y, was Wilrna Crumley, assistant director of UNL's
School of Journalism.
The School of Journalism and College of Home
Economics joined in a study last year which examined the
career paths of women in traditional fields such as home
economics and non-traditional fields such as journalism,
Crumley said.
Each department sent questionnaires to 1965 and 1969
graduates,- she. swd. The study included which represented
80 per cent of both fields.
One of the conclusions drawn from the study was that
there are no significant differences in job satisfaction
according to college majors, sex, number of children or
years since graduation, she said.
Another" conclusion was that college graduates appear
to believe they encounter special problems with their
careers and goals after five and ten years of full-time
employment, she said.
Crumley noted that men push ahead in careers more
frequently than females. This, she said, may be the result of
males being more mobile than females.
She also said that although the questionnaire did not
specify homemaker as a career, the study received many
replies that listed it as one.
According to the study, Crumley said, more women may
find significant problems when moving to management type
careers
Crumley said that the study is continuing and that
Louisiana State University and Missouri State will conduct
the same type of studies this year.
