Two photographs are of a recent
volcano eruption on an island near Iceland,
Nelson said, and most are nature scenes.
"The Bird Decoy: An American Art
horm" is displayed in the upstairs north
wing of Sheldon. About 300 decoys of
several kinds of birds, including geese,
"The American Indians, as far as any
body knows, were the first to make bird
decoys," Nelson said. "It really is a native
American art form." .
No American Indian decoys are dis
played, however. A 1,000-year-old decoy
from the Museum of the American Indian
in New York City was supposed to be sent
to Sheldon, but the New York attorney
general decided nothing should leave the
museum, Nelson said.
The display does have decoys made as
early as the 19ih century,Jxe said.
