Godspell '
Inspiring
The Lincoln Community Playhouse opened their 36th season with an in.
Action of the rock-musical, Godspell Wlth m msPlrin8 Pr-
Based on the scriptures of St. Matthew, Godspell was written h t. i
Tebelak, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. by John-Mael
Directed by E. Mike Dobbhis, the success of Godspell can be attributed to the cast's
unlimited enthusiasm. Their vitality in song and dance was a contagious pleasure
Coherence of the ensemble provokes qualms as I cite exceptional performances, how--ever
1 think they are justified. v
Dave Landis offers a vibrant portrayal of the contemporary Christ figure. Always a
strong vocalist, Landis s Save the People," injected the first volts of current into this
electric and energetic show.
Jill Eiche, the comic comrade, consistently induced laughter throughout the musical
A burlesque approach to "Turn Back, 0 Man," was beyond reproach.
Melodee Landis is comically, dramatically and musically dynamic. The highly-spirited
theme of Godspell was dominated as she delivered "Bless the Lord" in tent-revival
style.
Occasionally, director Dobbins has been considered a controversial figure in theater
The only question concerning his Godspell effort is how many times to see it.
Godspell is a rarity. Seldom do you find such enthusiastic and talented
actors couples with a successful script and musical score. Together they produce
a show youH long remember.
7-bernstein on words
Don't say ex for et
By Theodore M. Bernstein
Nix on ex-, A common mispronuncia
tion is ex cetera for et cetera. The term is
of Latin origin: et, meaning and, plus
cetera, meaning other (things). If you have
et, keep away from ex. And there's some
food for thought for you.
like so. Often we hear sentences such as,
Vou do it like so" What Leonard Stein of
Philadelphia would like to know is whether
that is just idiomatic or is incorrect. It's a.
borderline case, which is best set down as
idiomatic of colloquial. If someone said,
"You do it like this," no question at all
would arise. But the words "like so" mean
like or as in a certain manner. The two
words have virtually the same sense and,
indeed, the "like" could be dropped with
out altering the meaning or the correctness
of the construction. On the other hand, in
the sentence, "You do it like this," the
"like" could not be omitted. Let's say
simply that the careful writer or speaker
would not use the "like so" version.
