Violinist Sergiu Luca, The Royal Shake
speare Company, The Bach Aria Group,
The Jose Uxnon Dance Company and
Pianist Agustin Anievas will be among
the performances presented this year by
the UNL Performing Arts Series at Kimball
Recital HalL
The season begins September 26 with a
performance by the eminent violinist
Sergiu Luca. ,
Luca, an orchestral soloist and chamber
player from Israel, began his career at the
age of nine with the Haifa Symphony, and
has since become acclaimed for his
interpretations of Sibelius and his
performances of JS. Bach's works for the
unaccompanied violin played with the
Baroque bow.
He made his American debut with the
Philadelphia Orchestra in 1965 and gained
national recognition in 1967 when he
played with the New York Philharmonic
under Leonard Bernstein in a nationwide
telecast of a "Tribute to Sibelius".
A visit by an ensemble from the Royal
Shakespeare Company on October 29th
will be the second program offered by the
Performing Arts Series.

The troupe will present Pleasure and
Repentance, one of Shakespeare's lighter
works on the topic of love.
February 12th, the Bach Aria Group
will return. The ensemble, directed by
William Scheide, will perform a number of
the arias and duets from the cantatas of
Bach.
The Jose Limon Dance Company will
present the third program of Performing
Arts Series on March 6. Ruth Currier, a
dancer who took over the company after
Limon's death in 1972, has retained
limon's choreography and added new
ballets to give the performance a balanced
look.
Closing the series on April 2 will be
Pianist Agustin Anievas, who, at the age of
four was the youngest person to give a re
cital at Mexico's Palace of Fine Arts.
Most of the artists also will be giving
mini-concerts and workshops on campus.
Tickets to the Performing Arts Series
are on a season subscription basis, and may
be purchased at the Kimball Hall Box
Office, 113 Wcstbrook Music Bldg. All
performances will be at Kimball Recital
Hall.

New York Mimist Keith Berger
New York City street mimist Keith Berger will perform in a free public program
at 8 p.m. Wednesday, in the Nebraska Union ballroom.
Free workshops on Tuesday at 4:30 and 7 p.m. in room 304 of the Women's PE
Bldg. will highlight Berger's two-day visit. Impromptu performances around campus
on Wednesday, as well as the Wednesday program finish his schedule.
At 21, Berger is one of the most celebrated artists in his field. He has received
invitations to perform at New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine, on several
television networks, and on college campuses across the country.
His UNL performances are sponsored by the Union Program Council's contemp
contemporary arts committee.

Kurt Vonncgut's latest novel, Breakfast
of Champions, is available in paperback for
only $1.75. Now it may be within budgets
of readers who lack, as Vonnegut says,
"doodley-squat."
Breakfast of Champions is the self
indulgent work of an author made rich by
his earlier novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, and
by the movie based upon it. The author's
illustrations include immature drawings
such as the one accompanying this review.
Breakfast of Champions is a wonderful
book.
It is dedicated to Phoebe Hurty. "She
taught us to be impolite in conversation
not only about sexual matters, but about
American history and famous heroes,
about the distribution of wealth, about
everything," says Vonnegut,
The book is full of impoliteness.
Vonnegut makes impolite statements
like "1492 was the year sea pirates began
to cheat and rob and kill the people living
in North America."
An incident similar to a recent indi
dent in Nebraska is near the end of the
book.
An artist from New York, Rabo
Karabekian, presents to Midland City a
painting of his which he declares a master
piece. Yet the skeptical Midwesterners of
Midland City hate the painting.
Tension rises until Karabekian explains
the paintings Then the Midwesterners are
happy, believing Midland City does indeed
own a masterpiece.
Recently New York sculptor Bradford
Graves came to Nebraska to explain his
piece of art. His is to be one of eight
sculptures placed along Nebraska's Inter
state 80 in honor of America's
Bicentennial.
But even after Graves's explanation,
many skeptical Nebraskans disliked the art.
MI still think it looks like buffalo chips,"
one woman reportedly remarked.
The illustration accompanying this
review is of that part of a buffalo whence
buffalo chips are issued.
