Women's sports meeting Capacity crowd greets new director By Susie Reit? A capacity crowd greeted UNL's women's athletic director and coaches for an organizational meeting of women's sports Thursday evening. The meeting for all women athletes interested in intercollegiate competition drew more than 200 women to the South Stadium theater. "Just this summer, we've seen a change in the athletic department's attitude toward women with a recognition of the need for a full-time athletic director and an assistant sports information director." Athletic Director Aileen Swofford told the crowd. Swofford discussed athletes' personal commitment to sports. "This is not going to be recreational," she said. "We have what we think are the top athletes in the state-maybe in the nation-and we are not going to play pitty-pat games. "It takes work to win." You have to work hard to achieve what you want. If you're involved, you can get people interested and excited about sports," Swofford said. . "We want to get people fired up and show that women in' sports are beautiful," she added. "That will take a lot of time, a lot of training, listening to coaches and a lot of sacrifices." "We're excited they've accepted us here. The athletic program has been built up for men and we want a good women's program, too," she said. -Building "This is a building year," Swofford said. "You've heard it before, but if we're going UNL women athletes to use new sports embiem design UNL's Women's Athletic Dept. has a new logo for use on all women's athletic uniforms, letterheads and equipment. "The women's Athletic Dept. is excited about the new logo," said Aileen Swofford, Women's atiiletic director. "We believe it will become the identifying mark of the highly competitive athletic program we will offer." The new emblem has the university "N as mainstay and incorporates a design exemplifying the female athlete, said Jay Davis, women's snorts information director. , A women's athletic logo was needed, so it was put on high priority, Davis said. The logo was designed by a Lincoln advertising agency. to have teams that can even compete in the . state of Nebraska, it will take athletes who want to work. "It will take a commitment by you to go to practice and work for yourselves, the teams, and the schcol " Swofford introduced the coaches and women's sports information director, Jay Davis. Coaches listed by season, include: Pat Sullivan, volleyball, swimming and diving; Larry Romjue, golf; Elizabeth Petrakis, field hockey; Karen Balke, gymnastics; George Nicodemus, basketball; Gail Whi taker, Tennis; Roger Capan, track and field, and Myreen Loveless, Softball. The department's academic counselor, Ursula Walsh, also was introduced. Tryouts and practices have started for volleyball, field hockey and golf. Winter sports organizational meetings are scheduled later in the month. house started in November 1972. Original estimates were to have it completed by the 1974-75 basketball season. Now completion of the field house is expected to be "sometime next spring," according to Athletic Director Bob Devaney. Head basketball coach Joe Qpriano said he is disappointed the team probably won't play in the new complex this season, but added the odds are very good for being in the new field house for the 1976-77 season. "We didn't get to use the field house for recru'ting purposes last year," Cipriano said, "but we should be able to get some recruiting out of it this year if finishing touches are being completed." "Our seniors would like to play in a new place, but they also realize they have a better home' court advantage at the Coliseum, and that should be an advantage in the upcoming season." Some teams on this year's schedule decided to play UNL because they thought the building would be done by this season, he said. Flans to remodel the Coliseum into classrooms for the Physical Education Dept. also have been delayed. Ticket manager Jim Pittenger said construction has not begun on remodeling and the Coliseum will be available for athletic department use until the new building is completed. "When the move is made to the new field house there will be some consideration made to price adjustments (on tickets) in some areas," he said. "For example, with the installation of theater-type seats in some areas, consideration is being given to increasing prices in those areas " Pittenger said. sports sfiofls Anyone interested in officiating flag football for the coming season should attend a meeting tonight at 7 pan. in the Nebraska Union small auditorium.
