e Word Unheard
Editor a note: Del Gustafson is a senior in political
science. If his column does not outrage us too frequently, it
wul run every Friday.
To those few incoming freshmen who are genuinely
concerned with affairs of the mind and who rapturously
envision that this university will provide the free and
stimulating exchange of ideas from which sweet and
delicate Truth will blossom:
Be advised that your time could be more profitably
spend watching reruns of the Mickey Mouse Qub.
Conformity reigns cn campus and nowhere has the
stifling hand of the tyrant been seen more cleariy than in
the pages of the Daily Nehraskan. Last year in particular
the Nebraskan reached new, dizzying heights of
conformity.
Day after predictable day, the Daily Nebraskan has
maintained a simplistic, isolationist approach to UJS.
foreign policy, an untauingiy liberal approach to domestic
policy and what might generously be termed a skeptical
attitude to religion on campus. ,
' Compounding this is the fact tha all students were and
are required to support the Daily Nebraskan. It is odd that
those who decry any belief in objective, absolute Truth
generally are the quickest to require that all people support
their positions.
It was my loathing of the Nebraskan's ideological
conformity that prompted my application to the paper as a
columnist.
Before applying last spring, I was an unsuccessful
candidate for AS UN president (if you're wondering what
AS UN stands foiv tike it from me-it stands for nothing).
In my campaign, I advocated policies and made bold and
courageous statements against the Daily Nebraskan.
In spite of this, I am now a columnist, and in this weekly
column will attempt to serve as a voice of incandescent
political and social Truths heretofore almost ignored at the
University ot Nebraska: t voice of the word unheard.

ASUN Opinion
Welcome to the UNL campus, whether you've never
been here before or whether you are an age-old veteran of
campus life.
It this is the first time on campus for you, the
appraoching semester might be vastly different from what
you have experienced before.
At first glance, there are countless buildings, lines and
procedures. For a few, this might seem too much of a
change.
But even those of you who keep coming back might take
a while to get accustomed again. New sidewalks have been
built, parking areas may have slightly changed and building
construction has miraculously, or tortuously, progressed.
Change on this campus always seems to appear, though at
varying rates of speed.
, As the student government of the Lincoln campuses,
ASUN also has seen change even in the last few years. From
being a predominately issue-oriented association in the late
'60s and early '70s, it has shifted some of that emphasis to
student service. Of course, it still is an advocate of student
concerns, but possibly not to as great extent as before.
Rather, ASUN has found increased use of such programs
as its legal services center and the book exchange in the last
few semesters. With campus support, such services can
continue and expand.
We at ASUN feel we can help both new and old students
with most problems. Stop by our office in the Union if you
can. Good luck for the upcoming year.
