Wednesday, august 20, 1975 daily nebraskan page 1 8 Libraries introduce students to services By Ann Owens Love Library will offer both formal and informal methods to introduce UNL students to the library system this fall, according to Dean Waddel, assistant director of libraries for public service. On the formal level, librarians will work with freshman English classes, Waddel said. "This is not a high level program, he said. "In one class session librarians try to familiarize students with basic services, personnel, the collection and holding's layout." Another formal method of introduction is tailored to needs of students and faculty in specific courses, Waddel said. "Librarians specializing in one topic can gear information and library materials to a particular level for the course," he said. Tours offered At the start of each semester Love Library offers tours, Waddel said. "Tours are kept on a general level," he said. "There hasn't been an overwhelming response to them in the past, so they remain very informal." The addition of the building's north' wing-" Love North"-will improve public . services at love, Waddel said. The library has been storing more than 200,000. volumes in C.Y. Thompson Library, the Undergraduate Library and the Law Library annex, he said. Move delayed "We had hoped to shift all of these collections before the fall semester started, but defective shelving is causing a delay. "When the shift is completed students "will have access to all volumes in one building. Waddel said shelves in the old building-now "Love South"-could not be rearranged to hold the extra books because they cannot sustain more than 60 pounds per square foot. To hold all the books the library has, he said, the old floors would have had to support 150 to 160 pounds per square foot. Study hall Waddel said the Undergraduate Library is scheduled to close at the end of first semester. The area will be kept open as a study hall, he added. The fourth floor of Love South, which housed the archives, has been emptied, and A faculty members waaaei saiu uucu - will be able to use the empty office space for projects. Persons interested in using the space should contact Mrs. Handy m Love S Waddel' said the increased space has allowed improved organization of reference materials. , . , "Card catalogues, which once snaked around the hall in a disorderly manner, are now in the link area which connects the old and new sections of the library, he said. Shelf list "The shelf list will chiefly benefit appear on the shelves, has been added to the card catalogues. "The sneia asi win cruelly benefit experienced library users," Waddel said "The unexperienced library user might find it hard to understand." Along with space changes, Love Library administrators revised the circulation format. A new library lending code allows more uniformity between the 13 UNL library units, Waddel said. Love Library, C.Y. Thompson Library and the Undergraduate Library will be open today, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. They will be closed Saturday and Sunday. i 1 . -ft. s-4 s!
