"From the beginning a bodybuilder works
with himself as a medium, in much the same way
that. . .Michelangeo worked with bronze and
Carrara marble-formalizing and idealizing his
material, . dispensing with its imperfections and
forcing an idea of it into design. In his work he is
after the sams basic qualities of balance and
clarity that those artists were after, so it is not
surprising that often the result of his work is
strikingly like the sculpture and painting of
classical and Renaissance artists. . ." That excerpt
n
from "Pumping Iron" by Charles Gaines helps
explain bodybuilding events such as the 1975
AAU Junior Mister U.S.A. competition held in
Lincoln Saturday and Sunday. Top left: The
winners line up including Frank Odoin, Long view
Tex., first place; Samuel Sanchez, Bronx, N.Y.,
second place; and John Burkeholder, from
Olympia Wash., third place. Top right: one
contestant displays his own formalized pose.
Bottom: The different positions of Paul Price of
Scranto, Pa. seem a muscular sequence of
motion.
