Henry Fonda 'Darrow' drama on ETV program schedule Drama in several forms is hiehliehted this week in the Nebraska ETV schedule. Nebraska-born actor Henry Fonda's ne-man performance in the title role of "Clarence Darrow, is being rebroadcast Monday, July 21, at 7 pjn. on the ETV Network. The program focuses on the life of the famous American trial lawyer, Clarence Darrow. Fondas performance as Darrow, which won critical acclaim in the theater and on commercial television, has been hailed as one of the finest of his distinguished career. The aim was to give the television audience the feeling of a theatrical event. Fonda is alone on the stage in this play, which is based upon the book Clarence Darrow for the Defense by Irving Stone. "The life of Leonardo da Vinci," a five-part series about the man, from his illegitimate birth in 1452 to his death 67 years later, is being rebroadcast beginning Sunday, July 20, at 8:30 p.m. Famous paintings Actor Ben Gazzara serves as host, introducing each program and giving viewers background information on the world 500 years ago and the artist's progress in that world. Scenes of Renaissance Florence are seen, as well as da Vinci's most famous paintings, including the "Adoration of the Magi,". "The Last Supper," and the "Gioconda," known throughout the world as "Mona Lisa." Tliw first episode takes viewers frrm da Vinci's early childhood as the bastard son of a peasant widow to his training in the studio workshop of Andrea del Verrochio in what then was the artisan's craft of painting. Here he grew from a young artist toward early artistic achievement with works such as "Adoration of the Magi." ' In a major international co-production arrangement, the National Public Affairs Center for Television (NPACT) will join the European Broadcasting Union, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and broadcasters from the Soviet Union for a two-hour critical review of mankind's use of outer space. Technology examined "Space for Man?" is scheduled to be broadcast Thursday, July 17, at 8 p.m. on the Nebraska ETV Network, just hours after the Apollo and Soyuz spacecraft are scheduled to be linked. The program will combine the resources and skills of approximately 20 nations to . examine how space technology has benefited man over the past 18 years and explore possible priorities for further space programs. NPACT Executive Producer Al Vecchione sees this project as coming as a historic moment. "The world's attention will be focused on the link-up of the Russian and American spacecraft during the afternoon of July 17," said Vecchione. "It is a symbolic event more than a major technological achievement. It signifies the end of a competitive era and the beginning, we hope, of a new spirit of space cooperation among nations. It is the perfect time to pause and reflect on what has been accomplished and what lies ahead." Two-part program The two-hour "Space for Man?" broadcast will have two parts: the international segment will be a 75-minute critical review of developments of advancing space technology and benefits to earthbound society derived from decades of effort. Using film and videotape contributions from nations on four continents with simultaneous French and English narration, this portion of the program will illustrate the uses of satellites and other technologies for communications, weather and earth resources observation, medicine and many other quality-of-life advances. At the conclusion of the international segment, NPACT will offer a 45-minute assessment of America's involvement in space exploration. Diverse opinions and concerns about the evolution and future directions of our space program will be presented by NPACT's Paul Duke, Jim Lehrer and Carolyn Lewis and their guests. .- Senator John Glen (D-Ohio) will review the U.S. role in space, its commitment, and its accomplishments. Other guests will include a "futurist" scientist reporting on fascinating new directions, such as space shuttles and solar cell platforms! and economists from both sides of the debate surrounding space fiscal priorities. .
