UN-L faculty team
begins bone research
. A $115,248 grant has been awarded to a team of UN-L
researchers for a study on cement, but not the kind used in
construction or to stick to pieces of paper together.
The study will be conducted on bone cement and the adding of
antibiotics to it to help prevent infection.
Bone cement is used to secure artifical joints to the bone in
surgery, said Dr. Alexander Peters, team coordinator and assistant
professor of mechanical engineering. ;. - - , .
Combats infection
The adding of antibotics to the cement could be a good way to
combat infection when artificial joint3 are used, Peters said.
Although incidents of infection of this type are not large, when
they occur, they are very serious, he said.
The research idea originated with Dr. William Gondring, a
Lincoln orthopedic surgeon.
Peters said they began talking about the idea about two years
ago and received some money fir m the University.
Two years of fiody
The grant, awarded by the National Institute of Health, is to be
used to finance two years of study.
The studies, which will be done at UN-L are designed to:
- Little research done
Only one brand of cement is now approved by the Food and
Drug Administration for use in the United States, Peters said,
adding that little research has been done toward combining it with
antibiotics. "
Other members of the research team are: Dr. Myron Fudwill,
department chairman of restorative dentistry; Dr. Ardyce Welch,
assistant professor of microbiology; Dr. Charles Ryan department
chairman of pharmacodynamics and toxicology; and Dr. Russell
Nelson, professor of mechanical engineering.
