Volunteer help needed
for disabled students
Disabled students are often given short shrift at UN-L, according
to Shaii Hier, communications director for Community
Involvement Services (formerly the Student Volunteer Bureau).
Heir said UN-L is far behind universities such as Missouri that
have complete service programs for disabled students.
Community Involvement Services is now trying to improve
services for disabled students.
Heir said a first step will be recruitment of volunteers to assist
disabled students, acting as readers and on campus escorts. Surveys
of the buildings on campus need to be taken to determine which
are obstacles for the disabled student.
In a study released June 2, the Nebraska Division of
Rehabilitation Services reported approximately 95 students with
disabilities attended UN-L in the 1974-75 spring semester. This
figure does not include the visually impaired. -
In addition to volunteer recruitment, classrooms and equipment
have been provided for use by the students and volunteers.
Volunteers are needed for both summer and fall. Interested person?
can contact Community involvement Services for information on
specific volunteer assignments.
