Howell Theatre at 8 p.m. V The play takes place in a steambath in lower Manhattan on the day the "Laugh-in" , television show was cancelled, Morgan said. So the entire theatre, which seats 99 people, is being decorated to look like a steambath. However, the audience will have to use its imagination as far as the steam is concerned, according to Morgan. Dry ice used Besides the use of some dry ice, the presence of steam will be established by the gestures of the actors, by the sound system and by costumes such as those worn by towel-clad ushers handling out programs to theatre-goers. In the play a group of ' people of different ages and backgrounds find themselves talking to God while they wait in limbo between this world and the next in the steambath. But God is not the "Cecil B. DeMille kind," according to Morgan but instead the steambath attendant who decides the fates of humans with the use of a console. "God takes various forms and plays games with the people but he is also probing," Morgan said. "He gives Tandy, the central character, a little more time because Tandy likes life and doesn't want to leave it." "However, God also tears down all of Tandy's defenses for wanting to stay alive until Tandy himself sees that he has no reasons to live." According to Morgan, Friedman deals with the ultimate concerns in his play. He is interested in "the tapestry of people, people with stories to tell. They may have tunnel vision and be absorbed in their little obsessions but there are no villians," Morgan added. "In the play we opt for mankind against the whimsical God." Contributed to 'Oh! Calcutta' Friedman is a young writer, born in 1930, vho established himself in 1964 after writing "Stern" and "Mother's Kisses." (Continued on pg. 11) nr7 . (MM m a There la a time for love.
