Grants given
to for ag study
Agricultural research at
UN-L will get a goost from a
pair of grants totaling
$163,607 .from the UJS.
Department of Agriculture's
Cooperative State Research
Service. ,
A grant of $63,664 will
support research by Anne
Vidaver and Robert Klucas
aimed at increasing the
efficiency with which bacteria
on soybean roots extract
nitrogen from the air and fix it
in the soil.
Improved strains of the
bacterium Rhizobium
japonicum have been
developed by scientists, but
they have not been able to
cprnpete with "wild" strains
already in the soil.
Vidaver, a bacteriologist in
the plant pathology
department, and Klucas, a
biochemist who has been
studying ways to increase the
working life of the rhizobia
bacteria, feel that the "wild"
bacteria may produce a
substance that poisons the
improved strains.
Learning why the improved
strains of rhizobia are not
competitive could lead to
techniques for increasing the
fixation of nitrogen in the soil
by the bacteria, thus reducing
the need to supply commercial
fertilizer and possibly improve
production.
A companion grant will
enable Kenneth, Nickerson,
' Thomas Helms, and M.G.
Boosalis to jrtudy substances
produced by a bacterium called
Bacillus thuringensis which are
poisonous to insects, but
harmless to humans.
The objective is to
eventually develop a natural
insecticide.
The scientists will extract
the poisons from concentrated
cultures of the bacteria and
test them against the cabbage
looper, European corn borer,
and army cutworm.
The research is part of the
USDA program through state
agricultural experiment
stations to provide better
methods of biological control .
of insect pests on food crops.
