Solar system
study subject
Kam-Ching Leung, director
of Behlen Observatory and
UN! associate professor of
pkyWcs has been awarded a
National Science Foundation
(NSF) Grant to complete a
study of NSF-funded
astronomy programs.
Lueng will conduct the
study over the next two
months in Washington, D.C.
The programs which he will
study include solar system
astronomy programs, stars and
stellar evolution programs,
stellar .systems and motion
programs, glactic and
extragalactic programs,
astronomical instrumentation
and development programs,
and the national astronomical
observatories programs.
Specifically, Dr. Leung will
be responsible for reviewing
the objectives of the various
programs, including recent
accomplishments and planning
for the future. Dr. Leung said
he is hopeful that the study
will be published by NSF in
the fall.
Group honors
UN-L prof
Leora Horning, associate
professor of education and
family resources at UN-L was
installed as president of the
national Home economics
Education Association (HEEA)
at the group's annual meeting
here Monday.
The UN-L College of Home
Economics staff member was
served this past year as
president-elect of the national
organization. She will serve a
two-year term as president.
HEEA is composed
primarily of secondary teachers
in home economics. The main
purpose of the organization is
to provide assistance to home
economics teachers in

year the group publishes
educational materials for its
members. Thii year's
publications deal with family
life education and co-ed home
economics at the secondary
level.
Miss Horning is a past state
membership , chairman for the
Home Economics Education
Association. She is also a past
president of the Nebraska
Home Econonics Association.

Gwendolyn Newkirk
Office goes
to Newkirk
Gwendolyn Newkirk,
chairman and professor of the
Department of Education and
Family Resources at UN-L will
be - installed this week as
president of the American
Home Economics Association
(AHEA) here at the group's
annual convention.
In assuming the top
leadership position of the
52,000-member AHEA, she
becomes the first black to head
the 66-year old organization.
The home economist said
she is dedicated to a profession
which "helps people to
improve their environment by
teaching them the skills needed
to cope with the basic day to
day problems of living."
In addition to her AHEA
involvement, Dr. Newkirk is
also a member of the Nebraska
Home Economics Association.

. During the convention, the
state home economics group
recognized the new AHEA
president by contributing over
$300 in scholarship monies to
AHEA in Dr. Newkirk's honor.
Dr. Newkirk's work in
home economics has brought
her recognition from many
professional groups such as the
American Vocational
Association, the Nebraska
Better Business Bureau and the
American Business Women's
Association.
Society elects
Psych faculty
Two members of the
UN-L Psychology Department
faculty have been elected to
posts in the American
Psychology-Law Society.
Bruce Dennis Sales, director
of the Law-Psychology
Graduate Training Program at
UN-L, was elected president.
David Levine, professor of
psychology, was elected to the
organization's board of
directors.
The American
PsychologyLaw Society was
formed nine years ago to
promote effective relationships
between psychology and law.
The organization encourages
exchanges between the
disciplines in teaching,
research, the administration of
justice, and jurisprudence, as
well as research which relates
psychological knowledge and
methods to legal problems.
