Tabletop season (Continued from pg. S) But he "was always a great bame player'' and took it up in 1963 after a magazine ad for the Strat-O-Matic BasebaJi Game caught his eye, "They still use the same ad, by the way," he said. He still remembers the first game. Vada Pinion homered to lift Cincinnati over Houston, 2-0. The highlight of his game-playing career came five years later, when Bob Givson of the St. Louis Cardinals threw a perfect game against the San Diego Padres. , A close second was, when Green Bay running back John Brockington gained 2,000 yards in just 10 games a few seasons ago. "He had a lot of carries," Davison said. During his earlier days, he adnitted, "t used to cheat for Green Bay and the Yankees" (his favorite teams) by giving them a second chance when a . key play would fail. . "I gave ail that up when I gave Joe Pepitone four chances' to win the game, and all four times he was out." This summer Davison is "off to a slower start than usual," each of the 24 teams having completed eight games. Normally he would have 12-14 games per team played by now, but summer schooS has tightened his schedule. He hopes to play 30 games per team before the summer is over. That's 360 games to complete before fall, when he will start right in on football. "I play whatever is in season," he said. Each baseball games takes 30 to 45 minutes, while a football game takes an hour or so. After each game he records the statistics, kept in vast piles under his bed, on shelves and in his closet. Five thousand games means a lot of time devoted to tabletop sports over the past 1 2 jyars.'Why does he do it? "It's a lot of fun." he said. "I'm a great fan end I'd like to know how players wouid do if I were handling the strategy." He said he doesn't think he could handle coaching because of its personal and psychological aspects, "And besides, if I weren't playing, I'd probably be lying around watching TV." Sometimes friends kid him for spending so much time playing games at his age, but it's not much of a problem because "people who know me just expect me to do it" since he's been at it so long. He also likes to match wits with someone at an occasional war strategy game, if he can find a partner who knows how to play. Davison's athletic activities aren't restricted to a card table. The Omahan. , lettered in football his senior year in high school and shoots golf in the mid-Bo's. ; The 6-1, 185-pounder also plays first base in two summer softball leagues. An avid Nebraska football fan, he hasn't missed a Big Red home game since 1963. When the season starts in the fall, he plans to be attending his 70th consecutive home game. A year from now, Davison plans to be out of college and in the marketing field, wearing sharp-looking suits to work, carrying ' a briefcase and learning ( the ropes of the business world. Later could come a wife, kids and a home in the suburbs. Do the games he plays fit into the picture? "I see no reason to quit," he said. n ..-5, i ' . r mn ' PhmfsA l Kotuff.X Complete Line of House Plants and Gift Items: Before you head for the hills... pr anywhere this slimmer, do your feel a favor and put them in a pair of BIKHNSTOCK sandals.
