Regent's tenure plan condemned by faculty More than 300 UNL faculty, members crowded into a special Faculty Senate meeting Tuesday, resulting in the adoption of six resolutions condemning action by the Board of Regents at their April 19 meeting. The senate meeting was called by President Richard Gilbert to encourage action concerning "a resolution adopted by the regents which called for a quota system in determining tenure for faculty members. The regent's resolution also proposed that all pending tenure recommendations be deferred for one month and that a study of university tenure policies be undertaken. In calling Tuesday's senate meeting, Gilbert said the adoption of quotas on tenure would "strike a severe blow to efforts to attract the kind of faculty member needed at UNL." "We must act with force against this situation," Gilbert said, and he opened the senate meeting with: "Well, they're after us again." Gilbert asked for unanimity from the senate and "a sense of proportion" in their action. The resolutions, brought forth from senate Committees, all passed unanimously. . 'Adversary relationships' Three resolutions from the liaison committee labeled the regent's action as "a violation of the principle of faculty participation in University governance," asked the regents if they prefer "more formal and adversary relationships with the faculty," and requested that the regents reverse their decision to establish a quota for tenured staff members. Several faculty members pledged support fqr the affected faculty members in a court challenge should the Regents refuse to reverse the decision. A resolution by the Academic Freedom Committee stated that "to deny tenure to faculty presently in tenure lines is to violate an inplied contractual agreement. . ." About 40 faculty members were left standing in the auditorium when the meeting began, but the auditorium was half-full by the time the meeting adjourned, after one-and-one-half hours of debate on the resolutions. The senate's final meeting of the academic year will take place May 6. Items on the agenda, according to Gilbert, include several resolutions dealing with sabbatical leaves, campus autonomy and funding of the State University of Nebraska (SUN). Sabbatical leaves The first resolution calls for the establishment of a Faculty Development Leave program to oversee the development and retraining of present faculty through sabbatical leaves. Another resolution asks that campus autonomy in planning and administering academic programs be given high priority, in or-der to improve the presently "inadequate" involvement of local campus faculty and administrators, and that System Office administration of local campus activities be minimized. The third resolution recommends that any money appropriated for Nebraskan television or multi-media courses produced by the University of Mid-America or similar organizations "be appropriated into one or more ot the divisions ot the University which have long been in existence to provide such services." doily nebr osteon Editor-in-chief: Was Albers.
