Student law president: Programs to retain qu ality NlTs law school recently was named a "Center of Excellence" and, according to Student Bar Association (SBA) president Gene Crump this honor should be "carried out in full capacity." Crump, a second-year law student who took office March 11, said he plans to do this by maintaining the competition that exists and by initiating several new programs. One of his major concerns is a proposed fees rebate for law students, he said. Recently, Crump appealed to the Fees Allocation Board (FAB) to return $7 of the $61 fee. Since law students'ire not undergraduates, they usually do not use the . student activities that are appropriated for by the FAB, Crump claimed. He said the fees rebate could be returned for use by students within the college. 'Has merits' Crump added that Chancellor James Zumberge and the FAB agreed the proposal had merits, but maintained that it was not the right time for such a proposal because the FAB was a young organization. Another of Crump's interests is retaining full professors by increasing their salaries. He said if a full professor is lost to another university, a less experienced associate professor would be hired for the same salary. Active in encouraging minority and low income students to apply for admission to law school, Crump, through SBA's Minority Recruitment Committee, has visited Chicanos and . Indians in western Nebraska colleges to encourage their attendance at NUs law school. "I think there is a cultural need for minority students in law," Crump said. He said a bilingual lawyer could be a great asset in representing defendants. Few minority students Crump said the small number of minority students in the law college results from a lack of minority undergraduates, which should change as more opportunities become available in minority education. Crump said he believed the law job market isn't as saturated as it's said to be. "There's always going to be work for law graduates because of their ability to rationalize facts and give answers," said Crump. He said the standardized entrance exams have inherent deficiencies but that the law school is no longer basing acceptance solely on test scores. Crump said U.S. Atty. Gen. Edward Levi will speak at a banquet May 1 in conjunction with Law Day and the dedication of the new law school building. i ' --WIT;.-.; iv: ! ' r".,, HWIlm MMmMMM .
