Students who think they know enough about
a subject and don't want to spend hours in the
classroom can test out of that course through a
College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
sponsored by the College Entrance Examination
Board.
By taking either a subject matter or general
examination, students can receive university
credit if their test socres meet requirements set
by UNL departments. CLEP credit has been
accepted at UNL for about seven years,
Lawrence Bundy, UNL director of registration
advising, said.
"It was ori'nally designed to recognize that
some people dLn't go on to college and have
backgrounds ' and experiences equivalent to
college level," he said.
Proper level
"CLEP gives them a chance to test out of
introductory courses and go on to the level that
they should be at," he added
When the program started nationally about
ten years ago, nearly 3,000 people took the tests,
he said. Since then, the program has grown and
about 77,000 people were involved in 1972-73,
he said.
At UNL, about 150 students have received
credit through CLEP, Bundy said. In 1973-74, 53
out of 60 who took the tests received credit, he
added.
Available
funds
increase
An increase of $150,000 in
scholarship funds for NU will
make $1,091,558 in private
support available for the
1975-76 school year.
According to Jack Ritchie,
UNL director of scholarships
and financial aids, this will
mean an estimated increase of
500 scholarships for the
Lincoln campus in $200 and
$300 amounts. More students
who are academically qualified
and have financial need will be
able to receive these
scholarships.
The increase. in scholarship
money, due to more private
donors and an increase in the
return on investments from
trust funds, will also free
money tor student loans. A
$500,000 increase in student
loan money will also be split
among the three campuses.
Since March 1 was the
deadline for applications for
scholarships for the coming
school year, only those who
applied ahead of time will be
eligible. However, loans and
employment help are still
available.

Departments set score
Sore requirements and university course
equivalencies - are established by university
departments from the colleges of Arts and
Science, Business Administration, Home
Economics and Teachers, according to Ted
Pfeifer, UNL director of registration and records.
Any number of CLEP hours may be taken and
applied toward a degree, subject to the dean's
approval, he added.
But CLEP hours are recorded only for
students who qualify for admissions and are
enrolled at UNL, Pfeifer said.
Credit recording
Nonstudents may take the examinations, but
the credit they receive isn't recorded until they
enroll in school, he said.
In addition, if a student with CLEP credit
transfers to UNL, the hours will be accepted only
if the score is accepted by the UNL department,
he said.
The percentile accepted by most UNL
departments is 50, Pfeifer said.
At UNL, CLEP tests are administered at the
teaching and learning center. The cost for one
test is $20. Two tests cost $30 and three to five
tests cost $40.
No tuition revenues are generated from the
tests, Pfiefef added.
