Psychologist criticizes
sex role stereotypes
Men are aggressive, analytical and manipulative, while women
are passive, dependent and nurturant.
Julie Homey, a post-doctoral research fellow in the UNL
psychology department, disagreed with these points at the
semester's final WomenSpeak meeting Tuesday. ?
In her presentation, "Psychology Defines Women, Homey
examined women, their roles and the roles' definitions. She said
statistically valid test results are not always meaningful. The more
subjects tested, Homey said, the fewer it takes to make a statistical
difference. , , . 4 . t.
Tests to determine traits are given to a group of subjects and the
scores are compared. Homey said these tests are invalid definitions
of women because the whole-group, not the individual, is tested.
She also said there are bigger differences within, rather than
between, the groups of men and women tested.
Because of a problem in figuring out what is being measured,
the relationship between the measure and the real world must
constantly be questioned, she said.
"Women have the whole world open to them," Homey said. It
women are put in the same situations as men they may behave like
men."
"Our goal," she said, "should be variability. Let individuals have
the entire range of possibilities open to their development."
