editona pll(fi)Dlfi) uiml ugiiness 'children's' minds, not buildings Editors note: The foUowine is the Scott Steen. The article by Joe Dreesen in the April 10 Daily Nebraskan, "Beauty forgotten on campus" was well intended. Evidently Dreesen doesn't look at the real ugliness of UNL. That real ugliness of which I speak is in the minds of the children, often called students, who attend this school. Dreesen obviously doesn't use the library often enough to realize the need of the new wing of the library. He also must not be involved in law or life sciences or he might see the need for these new buildings as well. The fact that the construction of these buildings does cause a good deal of unsightliness on our campus cannot be denied. The noise produced by equipment and vehicles is synonymous with the eyesore caused by the mentioned construction. But perhaps if Mr. Dreesen would consider the need for such buildings, he would not complain as much. THIS CERlMW: IS A PlEASW EMFM& FOR A DRIVE THAI) CAMW. II The real problem, as I mentioned before is, in fact, not the construction on campus. The problem is within the minds of UNL's children-er, excuse me students, as they are often called. Yes, Mr. Dreesen, the students of this campus are what produces its ugliness. if MP This ugliness includes such things as stringing toilet paper in the trees and bushes on 16th Street after spring vacation. Ugliness exists in the minds of those who broke the domes of the street lamps along S Street from 16th Street to the Union and along R Street from the Union to Nebraska Bookstore last weekend. Ugliness is in the minds of those who open a candy bar or stick of gum and can't walk 50 yards to dispose of it in a trash container. Mr. Dreesen, the ugliness is in those who walk all over the grass, taking short cuts instead of using sidewalks, thus making our campus look like a cattle pasture. Ugliness is in the yards of the Greek houses whose decorations blow all over campus during Homecoming (a rather nice way to impress the alumni). Finally, ugliness is in the minds of those living on the west side of Cather Hall. These people insist on using the grassy area west of Cather as a garbage dump for their empty beer bottles. Only seven months ago one could walk through this area barefoot without worry. It is so covered with glass now that it is ugly, just as ugly as the rest of this campus and the people using it.
