Zaruini said the housing office was able to get a lower price than usual on the carpet because the supplier had an excess in stock. The total cost of the carpet, padding and installation is about $6,184.70 or about $8.24 per square yard. The four floors chosen by the residence hall directors, Smith 3 and 9, Harper 8 and Schramm 2, were to be carpeted during spring break but weren't because the original bidder didn't supply the padding in time and a different company was chosen. No interference The remaining floors in the complex will be carpeted while the halls are being used for summer housing. Zannini said it won't interfere with student activities, and other residence halls had been carpeted with students living in them. The carpet will be red, red tweed and lime tweed, and will be installed at a cost of about $50,782 or $8.83 per square yard. Zannini said he was considering buying a $650 battery-operated vacuum cleaner to be used at the Harper-Schramm-Smith complex. The housing office will also have to purchase shampoo equipment, he said. get carpet As much of the Neihardt Residential Center will be carpeted this summer as funds allow, Zannini said. If the housing office can acquire the carpet for the same price as that at Harper-Schramm-Smith, Zannini said, the whole hall could be carpeted. Carpet will also be installed this summer in the Park apartments and the north lounge and office in Abel residence hall, he said. Cather-Pound problem Cather-Pound and Selleck residence halls are the only other halls not carpeted. Zannini said he has measured floor area in Selleck so it will be ready if carpeting it becomes feasible. Carpeting Cather and Pound Halls is difficult now because the elevators only stop on every other floor and maintenance equipment is too large to carry easily from floor to floor. Zannini said the housing office should consider changing the elevators to stop oiievery floor if they consider carpeting it. It would take two men to carry the heavy maintenance equipment up and down the stairs, and after six or seven years the cost of luring another employe might compensate for the cost of changing the elevators, he said. He said that if the Cather-Pound halls are carpeted without changing the elevators, maintenance will have to use small equipment that is earily movable but possibly less efficient.
