Bill changes student
The Nebraska Legislature has passed a bill which will allow
full-time students who work full time to be eligible for
unemployment compensation if they lose their jobs.
LB370, sponsored by Sen. George Burrows of Adams, passed
35-5 and was sent to the governor for his signature.
Gov. J. James Exon has not had time to study LB370 because
he has' been surveying blizzard damage in western Nebraska,
according to an office spokesman. The bill has not been presented
to him yet. . '
Currently, full time workers who are part-time students are
covered by unemployment compensation, but full-time students
under the same conditions are not.
Jack Ritchie, director of financial aids at UNL, said he does not
think many UNL students will be affected by the proposed law.
"We have a lot of staff who work full time who take a few hours
of classes, but not too many full-time students who are working
full time," he said.
Ritchie said until the regents change university policy 18
months ago, UNL students were prohibited from working full time
if they were full-time students. This previous ruling, he said, may
be partly responsible for the low number of full-time students with
full-time jobs.
