UNL photo services produces visual aids "Any number of things" related to production of visual aids for other university departments describes the work of the University Photographic Services, according to manager Kaz Tada. The service functions in three areas, he said-still photography, motion pictures and commercial art. Any request for work done in these areas is directed to the service. Tada has a full-time staff of 1 1 and several student employes. The office has about 80 to 100 requests for productions each week, he said. Most" of the work is with still pictures, he said. No outside funds The department receives no outside funds and maintains staff, equipment and improvements by the charges for the departments services. The department's charges are lower than those of commercial photographic production studios, but it is not permitted to compete with them. Tada's salary is paid from university funds. Most of the work is for other university departments, but state agencies contact Tada for various visual services, Tada said. Services provided in the still picture department include taking, developing and printing photographs and photographic slides. The department has negatives which date to 1906. One of the department's biggest tasks is motion picture production, Tada said. The staff does everything from subject research and script writing to actual production and photography, editing, mixing and printing, he said. Filming studio v The department has one large . studio for filming motion pictures. Recent productions include several films for the educable mentally handicapped and a presentation to prospective employers on hiring visually impaired persons. A recent addition to the motion picture laboratory is a color motion picture film processor, Tada said. The device has run more than 200,000 feet of film since its installation in September. Tada's department films all football and basketball games for the coaching staff, which prompted the purchase of the color processor. The processor cost $7,000 and will be paid for by the customers using it, chiefly the athletic department and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. Department's award A number of years ago, the department won honorable mention in Look magazine's Screen Directors Guild awards for a film they did on ROTC's Pershing Rifles. The black signs with white lettering over nearly every door at the university are made in the commercial art department of photographic services. The department also designs jacket covers for books published by University Press, informational brochures and numerous bulletin board posters and banners. S3 m s. 'ft.
