Students required to follow bike laws Spring soon will be here, and when it comes many students will drsg out tbfir bicycles for transport 2 ti on around the city. For students who are part time residents, here are some rules and regulations from the Lincoln Police Department that bicyclists ought to know. Lieutenant Ernest Berry said, "Operate a bicycle as though it were a motor vehicle, with all the laws that pertain to motor vehicles. That's probably a wise rule because bicyclists are more likely to be injured" than car drivers. Some regulations more specific than the vehicle laws are: It is unlawful for bicyclists to carry packages, bundles or articles which prevents keeping both hands on the handlebars. -Persons riding bicycles should ride single file. Persons riding bicycles should keep as near as possible to the right hand curb. It is against the law to ride a bicycle upon any street or public way within the city without having it registered, and without having a number plate displayed. The city provides a registration certificate corresponding to a license plate. Registration fee is 50 cents. Licenses may be obtained at any city fire station from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Every bicycle operated on Lincoln's streets must be equipped with brakes, a red reflector button not less than two inches in diameter placed on the rear, and a light on the front. The light must be used one-half hour after sunset to one-half hour before sunrise. Bicycles are inspected when registered and may be rejected if found to be in an unsafe condition. -It is unlawful to ride a bicycle on the sidewalks between "M" St. and "CT St. and 1 0th St. to 1 6th St. It is unlawful to attach a bicycle to a fire hydrant. Violation of the bicycle regulations is a misdemeanor and conviction may carry a fine up to $100. The violator also may be ordered to surrender the bicycle for up to six months, or may lose the registration plate for a period of six months. doilu nebraskan Editor-in-chief: Wes Albers.
