UNL officials prime for high school fans By Randy Wright High School students following their favorite teams across the state for the Nebraska State High School Basketball Tournament beginning Thursday in Lincoln are causing UNL officials to make necessary preparations. A total attendance of about 78,000 is expected for the four days of the tournament, according to Les Chamberlin, Executive Secretary for the Nebraska School Activities Association (NSAA). Captain Kenneth Markle of Campus Police said parking and traffic during the tournament are "problem areas," but that NSAA has hired student security guards from residence halls to "keep an eye on the parking lots." Markle said the State Fairgrounds will be open for parking during the tournament and shuttle buses will run continuously from the fairgrounds to the UNL Coliseum and Pershing Auditorium. "The service was designed," he said, "to encourage parking off the main campus." Theft increase Residence halls and Greek houses usually experience an increased number of thefts from autos and rooms during the tournament, Markle said, and added that Campus Police is asking students to be especially careful about keeping their property locked whenever possible. Fawzi Hermes, interim associate director of housing, said students living in residence halls are allowed one guest in a two-person room for the weekend. The guests are required to register with the residence halls, he said, and extra rooms on the floor, if there are any, can be opened for guests if additional space is needed. Hermes said the tournament does not represent any special problems for staff members, but the increase activity means more work for many. Some franternities sponsor informal rusli parties for visiting highschool students on the weekend, according to Interfraternity Council President Al Eveland, but he said complaints about the parties have been rare. Expenses paid Chamberlin said the NSAA does not pay rent for the Coliseum, but it does pay all expenses incurred by its use. The university is entitled to all proceeds from concessions, he said. It has not been determined whether or not next year's tournament will be held in the new sports complex, Chamberlin said. Jim Pittenger, athletic ticket manager, said the State High School Basketball Association has ruled that the student price of tournament tickets applies only to students of high school age or under. University students will be classified as adults, he said", and will be required to purchase $2 tickets for each session. UNL season basketball tickets will not be accepted, he said.
