Tonight at 8 p.m.. Raton Stanlev and tlif
Clinch Mountain Boys will be in concert at the
East Campus Union.
The concert is sponsored by the Nebraska
Union Concerts Committee.
One of the primal forces in the rk
bluegrass music, Stanlev ("with his brother Carter
who died in 1966) formed the original Clinch
Mountain Boys in the mid-1940s, following the
success of Bill Monroe and his Bluegrass Boys.
Hailing from the mountains of southwest
Virginia, the group features an "old-time" sound
derived from Stanley's banjo style. An expert in
the traditional "frailing" style as well as in the
more common Scruggs picking, Stanley has been
called by critics a master of the five-string banjo.
The group has recorded over fifty albums, and
their renditions of Fields Have Turned Brown,
Man of Constant Sorrow, and Shenandoah Waltz
have achieved the status of classics of the
bluegrass genre.
Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys have
played in a wide variety of locations, ranging
from the Wheeling, West Virginia Jamboree to
me amnnsonian r-olklore f estival, and play
many bluegrass festivals.
Appearing with Stanley and the Boys will be
the Bluegrass Crusade, who have built a solid
regional reputation. The concert is open to the
public, with SI admission.
