Pre-med students await yes, no

Paul Landolt, professor of zoology and chief
adviser for pre-medical students at UNL.
Most pre-medical school students who have
applied to medical school should know by the end of
March if they have been accepted, according to Dr.
Paul Landolt, chief pre-medical advisor at UNL.
Landolt said scholastic records, Medical College
Admissions Tests (MCAT) scores, interviews by the
examining board of the medical school and
recommendations submitted by the students are the
criteria used to select students.
Landolt said one member of the University of
Nebraska Medical College admissions board estimated
60 per cent of whether a student is accepted is
determined by the MCAT and the student's scholastic
record. The remaining 40 per cent is determined by
the recommendations and the interview.
The MCAT must be taken at least one year before
the student plans to enter medical school, Landolt
said.
A student may be accepted with a minimum of 90
hours credit, Landolt said, provided the 90 hours
include the student's group requirements. If a student
is accepted with 90 hours credit, his first year of
medical school is used to finish work on his
undergraduate degree.
Landolt said a student can apply after his junior
year and if not accepted usually applies again the
next year.
Costs $25
Students may take the Medical College Admissions
Test as many times as they warn but it costs $25
every time, Landolt said.
The students list on the test application the
schools they want the test results sent to. Scores of
the last three MCAT's taken by the student are
reported to those schools.
Landolt said many students first take the test to
gain experience. "I recommend to my advisees they
take the test twice," he added.
One of every three UNL students who apply to the
University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) is
accepted, Landolt estimated. Out of all the
applications received by the UNMC one of every 10 is
accepted, he said.
Landolt said UNMC chooses 145 students from
1,200 applicants each year. The Creighton Medical
School, receives over 3,000 applications each year, he
said.
Many students who are not accepted to a medical
school the first time try again, Landolt said. Others
disappear, go into different fields or enter related
fields also starting to get crowded.
Cheating a possibility
Because the acceptance rate is a lot lower than the
number of application., cheating on the MCAT is
always a possibility.
Landolt said students must submit 'photographs
with the test application. The picture is compared
with the student who shows up to take the test
Landolt said. When the student arrives at the medical
school, he is compared to the pictures again, Landolt
said.
. Frank Hallgren, director of the University Career
Planning and Placement Center, Graduate and
Professional School Testing, said there has never been
a "questionable" test turned in. Hallgren is
responsible for administering the MCAT at UNL.
If it happened, Hallgren said, the schools receiving
the application would be informed there was a
question about the test's validity. A report is made to
the American College Testing Program, which
administers the tests nationally, Hallgren said. He
added that law suits have been brought over the
validity of some tests.

In Italy, in the 1800's a
poor priest met a boy of the
streets. At that time there were
thousands of such boys In
Turin . . . hungry, homeless and
without hope.
But what could one priest
do? Without money. Without
support. Without even a
building to house them.
But Father John Bosco did make a difference. He founded
the first community that was dedicated primarily to youth. With
a program of play, learn and pray he brought the boys from the
streets back to God and gave them a r.zzr. of earning thir
living. From such humble beginnings a movement began that
now reaches around the world ... a movement that has touched
the lives of millions of youngsters - the children of
St. John Bosco.
Today over 22,000 Saiesians carry on his work In 73
countries. A family of community-minded men who help to build
a better world by preparing young boys to be good citizens for
both God and country. Saiesians serve as teachers, coaches,
counselors, parish priests and missionaries. You see, one priest
con make a big difference.
