David Golden, UNL physics professor, has received a $78,700 grant from the National
science foundation to do ion fusion research.
Physics professor
given research grant
A $78,700 grant from the National Science Foundation has
been received by UNL physics professor David Golden.
The grant will be for ion fusion research using a new electron
impact laser. Golden said he will be working on the project at the
UNL campus.
He said he was first contacted by the U.S. Air Force about his
project. While the Air Force Office of Scientific Research studied
his proposal, Golden was approached by the National Science
Foundation. The same research proposal submitted to" the Air
Force was submitted to the foundation, Golden said.
His paper on the electron impact laser machanism was received
by the foundation in January 1974 and published last June.
Golden is not the only university faculty member receiving
research money. He said that of all the grant money received by
UNL faculty members, 10 per cent goes to the physics department.
UNL has one of the leading atomic physics groups in the world,
Golden said. Golden is currently working with two other UNL
professors, Duane Jaecks and Joseph Macek, in an effort to make
the university one of the leaders in energy related research, he said.
The three are working on a project to determine the balance
between negative hydrogen ions, photons, electrons and hydrogen
atoms at high temperatures. This reaction is important in
thermo-nuclear research, Golden said.
Golden said he is one of the seven UNL specialists in atomic
physics vvho receive outside financial support.
The grant he received to develop the laser mechanism is one
aspect of the energy related research being conducted at UNL, he
said.
