Breast cancer needn't take the lives of so many American womenJoy York, Lancaster County officer of the American Cancer Society, told Tuesday's WomenSpeak audience. York said breast cancer cannot be prevented but in nearly all cases can be stopped from spreading if discovered in time. A breast self-examination once a month is a simple way to make sure that "lives are not taken needlessly," she said. Uterine cancer also unnecessarily kills women, York said. Forty-five thousand women contract uterine cancer every year and 13,000 die from it, she said. It affects women of all ages but blacks and Latin American women seem to be more susceptible. Uterine cancer can be cured if caught and treated in time, she said. A PAP smear is used to detect uterine cancer. Women should be tested annually, she sa:d. York said 25 per cent of American women have had PAP smears.
